my mate has a EDM Integra type R, he has had it for over a year now, he says he keeps on hearing a 'knock' of some sort, he can hear it at idle and sometimes through the exhaust and sometimes sounds a bit intermitant, i cant really explain what it sounds like but i just thought id ask. To me it sounds like its coming from the back of the engine.

Car: Approx 80k, DC Stainless Manifold,Full stainless custom exhaust, aem CAI apart from that, its comp stock. keeps it in a1 condition.

damn dude can you provide me with more of what the problem is. like when it idles or how about driving it normally? the knocking is from the back of the engine? tried finding a lift and jacking the car up?

 

it sort of goes ........tock tock tock tock.....................tock tock tock tock................tock tock tock tock, like its not consistantly making the noise its intermitant, drives normally, still pulls like a trooper, not sure whether he has got under the car or not, he seems to think it could be the bottom end but i would of thought if it was then things would get worse very quickly, i know most hondas are noisy but this is different from the usual tappy tapp.
i was just after ideas of what could be making the noise, LMAs? Injectors? i aint a mechanic so i aint really got a clue, just fishing for ideas.

 

if it doesn't make a noise constantly, or in rythym with the revs of the engine....


does it vary when you change the throttle position and alter the load on the engine?

does it happen when you lift off, keep the throttle on, when you're sat still, at idle?

 

Ive just sent him a text, just waiting for the reply, not my car you see so i only hear it now n again, where abouts is Bumville then?

 

He says it happens when he revs it up and lets off, any ideas?

regarding the noise, i really can't put my finger on it. i did have an idea but it doesn't sound like it. i think you may be waiting for someone else to chime in thats had something like this before

Any other suggestions?

 

Get under the car and look at where the cat and pipe meet - the connection may be loose. Sounds like there may be something swinging around because it isn't properly attached (hanger, flange connection, etc). Maybe even a loose heat shield.

 

i dont think its flange related mate, it does sound like something in the engine itself, now ive noticed my 99si making the same noise, what do LMAs sound like when they are on the way out?
