Default for people that paint for a living, fluid tip and shop line paint

Last time I painted I had some trouble I was using devilbliss 670 1.3 tip. I mixed the paint as it said. I had a break in my paint I had paint at the top and bottom not much in the middle like I had too much air. I went to 20psi from 30psi to make it spray right that can't be right. I do remember when I used to paint I was at 35psi to 40psi I'm thinking the paint was mixed too thin if it was too thin how far down can I take the reducer? the reducer just reduces the thickness of the paint right?

Nope we all work at Taco Bell. IMO sounds like you have a fucked up/ dirty cap and or needle tip. Did you try stripping the internal parts that effect the spray pattern? If the ratio mix was correct, sounds like the gun is messed up or not adjusted right.

How was the viscosity of the mixed clear compared to the reduced base? How do you set your material feed on the gun for base and clear? Any time I've experienced a fucked up spray pattern its always been the gun.

I just checked out a paint/refinish guide I have. Its got a few different spray pattern cause and effects. It states that the pattern you describe could result from the pressure being too high and/or the material is too thin. Maybe you had a combo of both. I spray a raw plastic adhesion promoter thats thin like water and I do spray a normal pattern. If the clear sprayed ok, then maybe the base was too thinned out with reducer?

like powerflow said, it sounds like the pressure is up to high. the spec sheet that shows the mixing ratios should also have spray gun pressure. i use a HVLP gun and i have my regulator set at 8-10 psi for paint and 12psi for clear.
