I'm looking to buy a used civic. Now the questions are what engines should I be looking out for? Does it need to be vtec? What trims? I got about 10k to spend and looking for a fast ride, but also needs to be stock. So far I like the 1999/2000 civic si.

 

stock civics are not fast. fast civics are not stock.

but i would think that 99/00 Si is probably the most power u could get being stock for a civic. am i right?

 

Which isn't neccessarily a good thing. I'm not looking for a super fast stock civic. Just looking for a good platform to start.

there u answer yourself..a good platform to start with..just look for a eg or ek with decent body chassis...engine and tranny does not matter to u...then go for a itr swap...that should be fast enough

 

Super fast stock civic get the 2006 and up Si but that is outta your price range. 1999-2000 Si is a really nice civic and I think you would be happy with that. It comes with a B16, nice close gearing transmission, not to mention plenty of after market support.

 

I keep seeing eg and ek. What do those stand for? I just read an entire article on the pros and cons but still have no clue. :S

i think u need to do a research before u really want to do anything..at least type in ek or eg civic in the google or yahoo search and u will know what they are.

When people say Ek, they're refering to a 1996-2000 hatch. A good platform. As well as the Eg, which is the 1992-1995 hatch. Very popular. We could go way more in depth with that, but that's really a good foundation for now.

Anyway, the 1999-2000 civic Si is your best bet since it's within your price range and is nice as is.

Why don't you want to modifiy. The least you could do to the Si is suspension

 

If you want a fast stock car spend 10k on a 99-01 trans am.

With good tires and some experience you'll be LUCKY to pull a low 15 in a stock si.

There's no such thing as a fast stock civic. Honestly you're barking up the wrong tree.


IMO, if you're dead set on a fast honda, spend 10k on someone's "finished" project that's got a good swap or a turbo.

thx for the info. Sure I'm deffinetly planning on some mods in the future, but I want to buy the car stock. I don't want to buy a modded civic because I want to make my own mark and who knows how they drove it before me.

I have another question. How much would you reckon you could knock a dealer off the sticker price on a used car in the 10k range?

depends how good your negotiating skills are.

 

If you're planning on modding it, and have $10k cash, buy a shell and do a k-swap. Or a b-series with a nice turbo setup.

If you're iffy on buying a shell or don't have a second car, buy a high mileage car with good exterior/interior and swap+turbo that.

 

What's the advantage to that? The car still is older so even with a swap won't it have problems?

10,000 budget iss hard pressed to get a shell and a k20 unless your gonna do the swap your self .. id stick with the 99/00 Si idea you can get one for under 10,000 spend the rest on mods that will keep it relieble and stock ish if you wan that..

 

If I had $10k and could do it over again, I would get someone RWD. A TT 300zx probably.

The year of the car doesn't have much to do with it. Just look around this site...a ton of 1990-2007 civics, integras, and many other hondas.

And no, a stock B is not better than a K. The price tag is better, but not the engine itself unless you're using a turbo B against another K. THe K can still woop some a$$ if you got deep pockets.

 

Civic199, get the '00 Civic Si. I own one and it's a great car. "Fast" is subjective but no one can argue that the Si has more than enough power for the street and it's responsive and a lot of fun to drive. It's new enough that you can find them in great shape in your price range with around 100,000 miles. Also, it's a great base for a project because it already has a great chassis and an excellent engine with lots of potential. And if you go through a dealer you're wasting money. I got mine from a private party, stock, with 120,000 miles for $8100. Trust me, you will not regret buying one.

 

With your 10k why not look around, you will have luck and find some EK model with itr swap and nice rims with most of the parts that you need. If you know nothing about turbo don't bother or you going to get more trouble later on.....but as far as just stock bone with power, 99-00 civic si would be your best choice.

if i had 10k, i'd definately not spend it on someone else's project. Has the potential to lead into endless problems....or not...it's the risk you take. It can be avoided by 1) starting off with a close to or bone stock platform and then if he wants to boost....well that'd be his problem if it leads to trouble. think about it, with a lot of research and planning, nothing about turbo that should lead to trouble.
