new suspension: Quantum RMs
i had been looking for something to replace my Ohlins PCV mainly because they're nearing their end and too soft for my taste. last night the door bell rang at 8:30pm and much to my surprise, the Quantum RMs i bought from the Japanese Yahoo auction finally arrived!

i've had stock, Spoon/Showa N1s, Mugen Lowdowns, Ohlins PCVs and by far these are my favorite. I got the Sports with the 16k/14k (885lb/775lb) Swift springs.
the first thing i noticed when i opened the package was how light the dampers were. upon closer inspection, i was very impressed with the craftmanship of them as well

driving impression: immediately i noticed was how short the stroke was. compared to the Quantums, the Ohlins feels downright sloppy, which is probably caused by the uber long springs and soft rates. another big surprise was that small sharp road imprefections do not faze these dampers despite the track oriented rates. i guess like they say, the better the dampers are valved, the more comfortable they actually are.
well, i wouldn't call them comfortable
they are very tolerable from sharp imperfections to mid size bumps, but big dips make themselves quite apparent, enough for me to recommend against these for DD suspension.
racing season is over this year so i can't quite comment on how they fare on the track/autoX but i can say the body motions are very tightly controlled at all speeds. like most stiffly spung cars, bodyroll is next to nil and the response is excellent.
its going in for an alignment tomorrow morning

I'm surprised that you got rid of the Spoon N1s and ended up liking the Quantum better. What didn't you like about the Spoon N1? What kind of rates you used?

Blasphemy!!
It makes lazy folk like me happy, without having to swap out shorter/longer springs just to maintain low to zero pre-load while being able to adjust the height...

i attribute that to the fact i got them used and were probably on their way out as well. i was surprised to see that they weren't leaking when i took them out. i only got to autoX on them several times before i sold them so i can't really comment on how they fare on the track
as for the rear spring rates on the quantums, i was wondering about that too. the seller listed them as 16/14 and i just went with what he said
you might be right though

yes. dampers are wear items to me. once they blow, i'll get rid of them and try something different

this has put an idea in my head. whilst the R is off the road over the winter i may send the sussy away to showa and get them rebuilt back to minty freshness
they were rebuilt when i bought them, but it can't hurt. by the way, have you cornerweighted the car when you've swapped over suspension?

My PIC R3 12/14K were very much the same way. bumps and imperfections were a breeze, but dips were definitely noticable. Tolerable, but noticable.

many many thanks bro, i've been struggling on trying to figure out whether to go spoon, ohlins or quantum
i had the cusco zero2 w/ 10k front 8k rear springs, they were just too soft and i was gonna order 12k front 10k rear, but we put them on my cousins eg hatch which worked good then his car got stolen...
but you've definately help me settle on choosing quantum with 16k front 14k rear
again thanks for the write up

I was thinking about ordering a suspension from YJA. What service did you use? I use Rinkya.
How much do they charge to ship suspension?
