Default high mileage engine

ok i have searched and am probably blind but my question is i have a 99 D16Y8 with 117k on the motor and i was told to run a high milage synthetic but i thought that if you run a synthetic can it mess up you engine by removing the gunk build-up and blowing seals? would it be safe to run a high milage synthetic or am i better off using old school oil? thanks for the advice

Synthetic oils and high mileage oils are two different things as far as I know. Synthetics are finer particles, so on older engines can supposedly sneak past seals easier as the finer oil can seek out any small flaws. High mileage oil does almost the opposite, where it has additives that are supposed to swell and moisturize your seals. I've got 345,000 km on mine and burn off about a litre of oil between changes (depending on how high it gets revved, if I'm gentle on her she won't burn anything, do 140 down the highway and there goes a litre in no time), and I use Castrol GTX High Mileage and I'm pleased with it.

Other than the fact that I think Quaker State is doody, if you're running synthetic and not getting any leaks then you're fine. And from what I hear once you start running synthetic you should keep it up, and not switch back and forth (too much expanding and compressing of seals I think is the reason, but not 100% sure). Maybe it's just because I've got 345,000 on mine, but hearing 100,000-ish and "high mileage" in the same sentence doesn't sound right to me.

this is false, you can switch back to conventional oil @ any time, you can even mix them( don't know why you would).

synblends ftl!

i run joe gibbs racing xp-1 (viscosity of a 5-30). I like non api oils a bit better seeing as how they have a bunch more zinc in them. I've used alot of synthetics and nonm (RP, Eneos, Castrol, Mobil 1 (JUNK!)), but when it comes to my money i'd rather have an oil meant for abused engines.

Up to 150,000 miles on a Honda isn't much. My B16A2 has about 120,000 miles and I'm just gonna start using Royal Purple 5W-30, we'll see how it works out.

Get a Carfax on the VIN that's on the engine, that should give you some idea of the mileage.

I thought that Valvoline was supposed to be great oil, but I used it once and I never will again. Burned through it like it was water or something.

Direct from Castrol:

Synthetic motor oil will ruin the seals in older vehicles and cause leaks.
Answer: MYTH! We're not sure who leaked that rumor, but synthetic motor oil does not cause leaks. It is 100% compatible with all automotive seal and gasket materials. In fact, SYNTEC meets additional ACEA seal protection requirements not even addressed in API specs. </TD></TR></TABLE>

My cars got 170,000 on it and I use Castrol syntec with no problems. The only oil I can say for sure that I would never use is Mobil 1, I work at a dealership, and every car that has Mobil1 in it, the oil is black and thin. Even if you change at the proper intervals.

i know that synthetics wont harm engine seals but they flush the gunk that has been building up there out of the engine and in some cases the seals are already falling apart and the gunk is what is keeping the engine from leaking thats why i thought you couldn't use synthetics on high mileage engines am i right or am i wrong in thinking this? thanks for any clarification

I put royal purple in my civic when I first got it...had 145,000 on it....it will not ruin the seals...but if you seals are already bad....its makes it worse....my car blew smoke like hell....switched to gtx high mileage and lucas oil stabilizer...now there is hardly any smoke at all....id do a compression test to see if your rings are still good b4 switching to synthetic.....but like everyone else said gtx high mileage is the **** and works

Mobil1 Synthetic....usee it, be happy and dont go back to crap. It doesnt burn like regular old oil, it doesnt gunk up, it stays running smooth and clean. Use it, always. Unless you want to be a little pricey, and do the royal purple

163k on mine and been using mobil 1 since 80k but before that I also used castrol gtx and actually castrol is in it now because I didn't really have the money for the mobil 1 but next change I'll prob. switch back to the synthetic. You can switch to synthetic from conventional oil and then back with no problems. 117k is nothing for a honda, I'm hoping to get another 100k+ out of mine. The main thing is to run a good quality name brand oil and a good filter, synthetics are obviously better but also have higher cost, some people say that you can go longer oil changes when using synthetics but I do not and still change every 3k-4k miles. I don't really pay attention to that honda reccommends oil changes at 7500 which I feel is way too long.

oh and my hx does not leak or use oil at all and still gets 40+mpg
