Default question on engine hoist lift capacity??

a 1 ton engine hoist (cherry picker) should be able to pick up an unloaded civic hatch front end correct??

I'm wanting to lift a civic body up and over an engine after unhooking it from the body and then roll the body back and out of the way.

a 1-ton hoist should be able to do this right?? or should I step up to a 2-ton hoist??

I dont really deal with huge engines or anything. the most I do is a ford 5.0 from time to time on my mustangs but those only weigh about 300lb or so....

main reason I'm interested in the 1-ton versus 2-ton is storage space reason. the 1-ton only takes up 2 square feet of space but a 2-ton takes up 4 square feet of space and my TINY 1-car garage is already cramped as it is....

i would say yes a 1 ton will pick up the front of a civic. What a civic weigh? like 2700 lbs? Plus the rear wheels will be suporting alot of that weight.

with the engine/trans out it will weigh like 800lbs up front. You can do it without a hoist. Take off the rear wheels and set the rear down as low as possible, jack the front end up, and the engine will slide out .

yes and its a pain in the *** to "slide" the engine out and scratches the **** out of my fresh poured slab AND my oilpan. no freakin thanks. I'd rather lift the car up and out of the way.

Wait...are you getting the engine hoist to lift the car over the engine? Why not just do it the normal way and pull the engine up through?

Heh, depending on the year a 1 ton crane would damn near lift the whole car off the ground...Properly strapped of course...

I needed to carry a huge foot shear and used my engine hoist at the half ton level because I needed the extra length. It carried the shear like nothing. The damn thing probably weighed just as much as an 84 crx HF.

i set it on cardboard, slides super easy.

I don't know how you're going to do what you're talking about. the legs of the hoist are under the engine. You can only pull the engine out the top with a hoist.
