STD transmissions did not have 23 splines. If you can't see that this guy is trying to pull something, you are very silly.

YOU know that YOU drove there in 5th gear, therefore the car had a 5-speed before you traded it. Tell the guy to screw off and quit trying to fleece you.

So there is physically a fifth gear but it's not engaging? It sounded like he was saying there were only four gears in the case.

Has he inspected the bearings / synchros / shift forks & rods?

he said he tore it all apart one day and found nothing wrong he said it was a 23 spline...std tranny or whatever... ]

i used to work at a performance warehouse and my buddy that I got the car from before i gve it to my other friend bought a clutch from me for a d16z6 ( si ) tranny stge 2 blh blah blah... and we put it in and it worked for about 2000 miles then he gave the car to me and i gave it to him ...

i dont know if a 5 spd tranny clutch is diffrent from a4 spd tranny clutch ( trannys and me dont mix ) but that tranny had the clutch the d16z6 calls for

No, you match the clutch to the number of splines on the transmission and its year (diff sizes), the D16Z6 trans has 21 just like all the 89-91 L3 transmissions.

Your friend must have mis-counted the splines. And no, the STD 4-speed trans has 21 just like the other 5-speed ones, provided it's an 89 or later.

Another easy way to tell if it's indeed a D16Z6 trans is to get the trans. code from the case.

Nope.

4spd STD mainshaft, 2 gears (1,3):

5spd Si (D16Z6) mainshaft, 3 gears (1,3,5):

ok you guys, im the one he traded. when i got it the camber was horrible so when i went to the wrecking yard to pick up si/dx hub and everything and got it installed. my axel would not go in. si/dx are the same and std are different. there is no way anyone is going to use std hubs on a si or dx tranny period.

but what yanks my chain is standard trannys do not have a fifth gear. but my tranny engages into 5th, but its like a neutral...and std axels are 23 spline

All inboard joints are the same on all axles that fit these transmissions. The hub sides are different on STDs and HFs versus Si/DX.

If you want to run Si axles, get Si hubs. Otherwise, just keep the STD hubs and use STD axles. You can run an Si or DX trans on an STD / HF but you have to use the axles that match the STD/HFhubs.

And sorry about the spline thing, I thought you were referring to the number of splines on the mainshaft, not the axles.

Hopefully that helps.

As far as the trans not wanting to go into fifth, maybe it's a shift linkage issue? is it difficult to get into first or third? have you opened the trans up to take a look yet?

bullshit.

i had a 91 STD 4 speed car, bought an SI trans, and the axles went right in perfectly. lasted for years too.

i know i was wrong. but if you were to try that with si axels? they would not fit in the hubs
