car randomly turning off and on
okay
my sister has an 02 em2
lately while driving, her car will just sort of turn off. her rpms drop and the light around drive(automatic) will turn off for like 2 seconds then turn back on.
the dealer said that we need to let the gas tank empty then put premium gas in. we did it and nothing has changed. it still just turns on and off it jus tmakes a little click and does it but we keep driving it like has a small jerk to it not really though.
any thoughts?
thanks

When it does it, does the lights for like head lights, radio or anything like that cut out?? If so you might have a problem with the power wire for the battery grounding out on something from vibrations. Sounds like its more of an electrical problem if the light around D is going out, not a mechanical. JMO
Sounds more electrical to me as well. You need more information... describe exactly what happens... Or does it just shut off then turn back on with no other signs?
it just turns off and back on with no other signs..the radio doesnt turn off...just the light around drive...im guessin the radio doesnt turn off and stuf because you know when your in your car and u dont have it on and the doors are closed the radios still stay on?
it just randomly turns on and off.
any other ideas?

Sounds kinda of like the case I had with my CRX... but that happened because there was pressure on my ecu (on the floor under the glove box, people would step on it)... sorry man ... at the moment... I don't have anything for you. Wouldn't hurt to go around and check all your electrical connections.
Was there anything done to the car recently?
Possibly a sensor? TDC? But I'm not sure it would continue to turn back on...

I have been having a similar problem w/ my 02 ex 5 speed. I was driving to work when first the ABS light came on, then all the gauge lights and radio shut off, the gauges zeroed, and headlights dimmed. My battery had been drained. My first thought was that the alternator had gone bad and the battery was no longer charging. After recharging the battery and getting home, I was able to test some voltages and found that the alternator was working. Some time had passed when this started to happen again. I stopped into an Advance Auto Parts store to have them charge the battery and test the alternator. The battery was shot... only putting out around 300 CCA (good battery is at least 410 CCA). The alternator test came back good. I replaced the battery and thought that everything was fine. Two days later (today) same old problem... battery drained... only measuring 12.5V at idle. Also the Check Engine light came on, and my code reader is telling me that there's a problem w/ the knock sensor 1 circuit. No clue what to do about that. I think I'd have to agree w/ Slidin'Sidewayz about the possibility of something grounding out somewhere, but where to begin. If anybody has had/seen a similar experience, please let me know...I'm pulling my hair out with this car right now, and I don't even know where to begin. Thanks
see im into eg's this is just my sisters car and im a noob at workin on cars, etc. but yeah she wants to get her alternater checked and all that. i havent been with her when its done it but it happens really quick and turns on and doesnt effect much ...but it did it like 4 times in like 2 mins.
we might have a reliable mechanic look at it but i wanted to see if anyone has ever had this problem.
thanks for the replies
any others are very welcome!

No it's not...
by your last post, it makes me think it's your TDC sensor.

^^^ This on the other hand sounds like an alternator... if your engine is idling you should be reading 14.5(ish) volts. If your reading 12.5 or possibly a little higher, I can almost guarantee it's your alternator. If you want a further explanation, just ask.

At this point, I might have to say that there's an intermittent problem w/ the ALT. Today before I left work, I checked voltages, and at idle it was around 13.3 V. When I'd rev up the engine a bit, the voltage would drop. This is really starting to annoy me. Or...the ALT could be on the way out, and it's just not putting out enough Amps to keep a proper charge on the battery. Maybe I'll run up to Advance and have them check the ALT again before it gets dark
Oh, and here's another twist. When I put in a brand new battery, my idle voltage was 14.5V. Ponder that over a case of beer.

I would say it's your alternator... I could write a 5 page report describing it to you, but I'll find the link to it... but you could have one set of diodes out (there is three) or it may be stuck in "limp mode" (for the alternator that is) I'll post the link that describes the system and how to diagnose it.
http://findarticles.com/p/arti...66330 <How charging system works and how to diagnose it.
http://powweb.hondahookup.com/...l.pdf <This is the service manual for the EP3 but it has the same charging system it has steps to diagnose and a wiring diagram that is helpful to understand how everything is connected. WARNING 56k KILLER (actually I think it would be near impossible, it is a HUGE pdf file).

Thanks. It's definitely the alternator. After my last post, I went out and checked the voltage, and it was lame; so I went up to Advance to get the battery charged, and by the time I got there (only a couple of miles from home) it was total system failure. The guy there said the same thing about the voltage regulator getting stuck. I'll check out those links, then.
sorry to steal the thread, jxhxb. hopefully this might help your sister's issue too. when you said that the RPMs drop, did you mean that the engine loses RPMs or gauges drop to zero. If it's just the gauges dropping and the dash lights going out, then she might be in the same boat as me with my problem. Best of luck.

turns out her viper alarm that has a kill switch
is turning her car on and off cuz something is messed up
it all makes sense the way the guy described it so now we gotta take it to the people that we bought the alarm from and make them pootytangs fix it. i guess the alarm was thinking someone is in the car and put th ekillswitch on real quick? or something like that. but hopefully its fixed this week.
