it looks like at the end it expands out gradually then reduces down right before the v band, why is that

That actually plays a part into the torque curve if I'm not mistaking....

Somethign to do with shaping the resonance or something like that. lol I could be wrong though.

I read about that recently. If i recall it helped with scavenging in some cases through sound wave propagation, or sumthing. Ill report back tonight or tomorrow after i check the chapter again though.

I believe using a stepped pipe reflects a lower amplitude wave back to the valve and creates a longer time for the use of a negative pressure wave, because following the reflection from the steppe would be another reflection from the open end of the pipe. (assuming the pipe is open)
