I was wondering about this and thought it would be stupid to ask but now I feel like less of a dumbass now

You can use high explosives to weld aluminum and steel...the after product is called "clad" and is used in places like nuclear power and chemical plants.

you lay the two sheet metals on top of each other, and then build a wooden curb ontop of the sheet metal around it like an outer frame. and fill it with explosive then ignite. the explosion causes the two metal to press into one another
it is no longer used in most nuclear power areas and it is not ideal or a good process
At work when we do aluminum to aluminum we use 50 series if I am not mistaking we also have a 40 series rod too

So much trouble... We get tons of steel welded to aluminum here. It's called Aluminized steel piping

Haha little difference there!

there is a way to fuse aluminum to steel.. a semi-trailer manufacturer that I sell has it patented. They fused aluminum crossmembers to their steel frame.
Midship...just so you know also, there are a couple places online that'll sell you any v-band combo you want without a change in price....so you can get one aluminum side and one steel side with the clamp. So if you do an aluminum exhaust you can connect it to the stainless dp.

friction "welding" can be used to join aluminum to steels. Some cars use it like you mentioned with trucks.
