Default insurance on type R

I have a problem, sort of. I'm looking into buying a type R here shortly but before I make the jump I wanted to get a good idea of what I would be paying for insurance. I got a quote, and it came out to be over $400 a month with full coverage which is what I would need for the loan, and a bit over $300 a month without full coverage, which is WAY out of my range for what I can afford. I'm 19 right now, so I know my rates would be higher than someone who is older...But I guess I just wanted to know if other type R owners could give me an idea of what their plan is like and how much they pay. I need to know if that is about what all people pay and I'm just out of my league, or if there are much better rates out there that I need to find. Thanks.

1st you definately need full coverage....If you cannot afford full coverage, do not buy one

2nd where will the car live? i.e. outside, in a garage....etc etc...

If the car has to live outside, be prepared when(or if) it gets stolen....

If it is going to be your daily and it falls in to one of the above, you may want to re-think purchasing one....

LOL I bought my R brand new in April 01 when I was 19 and my insurance full coverage, parked in a garage, blah, blah was over $400, I can't remember exactly, I am now 26 and my insurance is through the same company and it is under $75 I believe, still full coverage

what thats crazy, you spent over $400 a month on the R when you first bought it? And now it is under 75$ a month...thats a huge difference. I plan on keeping it in a garage, for obvious theft reasons; and I dont want to purchase the R unless I can afford full coverage. Is there anyone out there who didnt have to pay $400 a month??

do you have a clean driving record? that will be the only thing to help you save a few bucks being that your 19. you can shop around, but Id say most places rates are gonna be high. unfortunately the ITR falls into the same catagory as a Corvette (in NY anyway, mine was insured in the High Performance vehicle class through Liberty Mutual) and because Integras in general are highly stolen cars, it will be tough finding a cheap rate. id say your best bet is to go to an independent insurance agent and let them search around for you because they have access to smaller companies that you might not know about it. my last 3 insurance carriers have been with smaller companies and all 3 were found through my agent.

regarding 400/month, even when I had points and a crappy record I wasnt paying that much. the most I ever paid just for the R was about 2500/yr. and dont forget that insurance premiums usually go down around 25 -27 years old. and you can take defensive driving which usually helps knock points off your record and bring premiums down around 10% (in NY anyway).

Well it was $400 for about a year because I had 2 or 3 dumb tickets for following too close, then it steadily dropped year by year, I think when I turned 22 or 23 it fell down to like $150 a month, then when I turned 25 it went down again to $75 or less

Yea thats what I was told, the premiums go down at about that age. The guy selling the R said he was paying a much lower rate when he bought it, about 130 a month, which is WAY more affordable. So I guess I should do a lot more shopping around and see if I cant find smaller companies. I went to my parents agent because I am currently covered under their plan and he didnt give me too many options, as far as smaller companies goes. He is the one that gave me the estimate of over 400 a month. My record isnt perfect, one ticket 7 over about 2 years back, but I wouldnt think it would be enough to throw the rates that high. Any one else got any ideas?

see, I have one ticket for speeding, 7 over, but that was about 2 years back. I know it doesnt erase from my record until five years after the incident, but one ticket that minor doesnt seem to be what would be doing it. Who do you go through?

You'd be surprised for someone your age, where do you live again? Any accidents?

Edit: nevermind I just saw you live in MI, which I think is high theft, could be a reason

Think of it this way, how many people your age do you know that are just reckless and dumb and probably shouldn't have a sports car? You may not think you should fall in that category because you don't act like them, but the insurance company doesn't know, they just think you are an immature 19 yr old

Oh I realize that, and agree with you 100%. But by being in that category I didnt imagine that it would raise the price THAT much, know what I mean. I was thinking more like $200 a month for an R insurance wise...I guess its seeming like I was wrong to figure. But there has to be a way to get a lower rate, seeing as not everyone had to pay this much when they were 19 for an R, maybe things have just changed drastically...anyone else out there that wants to share their rates for their type R?

Oh and thanks for your help and thoughts, I really appreciate it man.

Oh my! So should what do you think then, should I have it insured under my dads name then? But wouldnt that mean he owns the rights to the registration? Is it possible for the title to be under my name (own the car) but have the registration/insurance under his name??

yea that makes sense, so more then likely, I should see how much it would be if I were to get you car insured under my dads name, if I'm unable to find a good price under my own name...damn I want to visit your car. Let me know what the shop says about the pulling, hopefully it is nothing to serius like a bent frame or whatever.

thats a really good question. But right now, the car I currently drive, is insured under my parents plan and I am just listed as a secondary driver. So if I were to get into an accident, I'm pretty sure it would still be covered. But the car isnt mine, technically. I make all of the payments and bought it and all of that, but it is under my dads name, both the title and registration.

If you're sweating a $400 payment, do not buy it. I wouldn't ever want to be financially strapped for a car.

Get a Civic, learn a ton, then move to an ITR when you're ready.
