Default looking to do a prelude h22 swap, questions about OBD and other problems

I found a 98 prelude locally for a really good price that has a blown engine. I want to swap the motor (actually my girlfriends dad, who is a mechanic, is going to do it), however I have found that h22 b6 engines are hard to come across (or are like 1000 more dollars).

Locally, I found a built h22 that is from a 99 prelude, so it WAS obd 2, however the guy converted it by swapping the engine harness to an OBD 1 engine. I figure that either way Im going to have to buy an OBD 1 engine because of the prices of the OBD2 (which would be the easiest route).

Now, my questions (if any have been answered just let me know, this is kind of a confusing set of questions and I have searched around for a few hrs with no luck)

-Whats the best way to convert it BACK into OBD2 or deal with the engine being OBD 1 in the first place.. Should I Just get a conversion harness?
-If i got the conversion harness, would I have to swap things like the oil pump and such?
- If I DO just get a conversion harness, would the ECU throw any cel codes? (I need to pass emissions after I get it registered)

- Does anyone think it would be a better idea to just find a b6 block and swap it?

Also, does anyone know where I can get an h22 block for a pretty good price ( not looking for high mileage crap, looking for a nice low mileage engine). I know H-motors online had them for 999 a while ago, but then they went up to 1300 and now they are discontinued . Does anyone have a h22 block they want to sell me? I live in CT if neone is interested, and am looking to purchase one in the next 1-2 weeks.

The built prelude motor is actually a type S. Here is a link to the exact motor. http://www.jspecauto.com/catal...id=16

Will that fit in a base 5g prelude if I have the tranny + motor?? Pleaseeee help, I have searched this before and from the looks of it on here people say it cant be done but on the J Spec motors website it says in the swap matrix that it can be done.

define "built" for us.
if you think OBD2 is better suited for you, see if you can rebuild that blown motor. or see if theres someone locally selling a motor thats not functioning 100%, and rebuild that. should be just around how much you're looking to spend.. and while you're in there you can build it now according to what mods you want in the future.

Yes can use an Obd1 motor in an Obd2 car. You will have to swap over the oil pump ( i would get a new one) and all the timing gears under the lower cover. Prettymuch make the OBD1 motor look like your OBD2 motor. Leave the intake manifold in/on the car just switch the longblocks and your done. Don't make it harder then it is.

he said he has emissions, i thought all OBD2 motors have 5 digits.. which is why h22a is no good. the motors i've seen for obd2 in US are like b18b1, h22a4, and so on

if thats not an issue, yeah md23vtec is right

Maybe its just me but when I got to emmissions they check the vin on the dash and sometimes the door. Give me my 14 bucks blah blah blah seeya. I have NEVER popped my hood( maybe cali is different). HE can pass emmissions doing what I said. He definatly wont pass using an OBD1 conversion.

I posted this on preludepower.net...please continue this there, however... in CT you need to have no CEL lights on and you pass...

im not sure.. lol for cali they check under your hood.. hell the DMV guy popped my hood today for vehicle verification. funny cuz he was like in his 40's and said "oh its got VTEC, nice." and proceeded with pretending that he knew what he was looking at. (he spent a good 5 minutes looking at my power steering hoses that were capped off, then went on the other side and looked at my cruise control stuff..)

but yeah, if they dont check for your engine's code.. ur good to go. or you could just stamp a 4 on the end of that jdm h22a.. c'mon, emission's a joke. lol

Exactly OBD2 cars they connect the scanner make sure you have no Codes and you PASS. DO what I said and your fine. Again your making it to hard. Also

YES any H motor will bolt up to your exhisting transmission in the car .

PLEASE heed this advice and get the obd2 oil pump and distributor swapped onto the obd1 engine

DO NOT wire things up to work with the obd1 hardware.

I made that mistake, trust me it doesn't work right

If i use the existing motor, and OBD 1 , how can i make the CEL ligth go off so I can pass emissions. If i convert it back to OBD II I wont have the engine tuned, so it will run like ****.

any ideas?

ALso, I cant use the type S engine with the regular h22a tranny, or so I thought?

it will run fine on the obd2 ecu, just get the sensors straight

you can use a type s engine with any transmission, you'll just need to get an adapter for the halfshaft. pm user "piratemcfred"

So wait, MD... What your saying is that I can keep the wiring the same, not even change the ECU and what not and bolt the current manifold onto the new one, switch the oil pump and timing gears and it will be able to run correctly without problems? To clarify, there cannot be ANY cel's on because it won't pass, in CT there cannot be any CELS or it is an automatic failure.

You are also saying to leave the current tranny intact... is it possible to just switch the tranny too or would I have to do more work, because then, like mg said I would have to convert the halfshaft, which is just going to cost me more money. If I have the tranny , why not swap it in?

BTW: Does the type S motor have Atts or no?? is that only SH?

Sorry for being a pain, and im very appreciative for everyones advise, its helping alot.

Leave everything the same except switch on an obd2 oil pump, both the crank gears, and the sensor that goes down there. You'll need an obd2 lower timing cover as well, and an obd2 distributor.

When you're pulling an engine, it is much easier to just pull the transmission too, so changing them out won't make any difference once everything is out of the car.

Is the car an SH?

The type-s (only available in japan) had atts, just like the SH. The base model does not have it.

You only need a halfshaft adapter to use a non-atts setup with an atts block.

no, the car is a base model....and so is the engine that is it in already (OBD2).

is it possible / easy to swap the tranny to the atts? Like I said before, the tranny that is in the motor that is built is stage - 2, so I would also have to get a stage 2 clutch if I used my existing tranny to handle the power---- meaning i would have to buy the halfshaft converter and a stage 2 clutch AND open up the existing tranny (that has 190k miles on it) and hope its all good and doesnt leak again.

If I use the tranny that comes with the built motor (type S, atts) would I be able to utilize the ATTS?? (since I am also swapping the motor, does the motor have the correct plugs to make the ATTS work?) keep in mind that my car is not a SH version, no existing ATTS (I did search this on the fourms, but I think it just made me more confused , it doesnt seem like anyone has done the exact swap that I am trying to perform with the special circumstances)

EDIT:::

I just did some more research and discovered that when you convert to OBD I you lose ATTS anyway ahhhhh

Also, I emailed the company that the motor came from and asked them about the swap and they said to swap the engine harness back to OBD 2 from my car,

I think my brain is going to explode someone help me

I'm glad someone else is having this problem...

Ok I just bought a 1997 Prelude - not a SH

It has the H22A4, I guess OBD2 in it. (It is the original engine)

I'm pretty sure the car has some lower end damage. (Rods?, Rings?, Cylinders?)

I don't think it has anything to do with the head or timing. Checked all that.

It's pretty damn clean and only has 120,000 on it. (The original owner was John Kitna... Funny huh) I got a good deal on it.

I have been reading the posts and feel I am in the same boat. I know how engines work and have rebuilt many small block chevys and fords and some V6's so Yes I know how to rebuild those engines.. But I haven't done a honda yet. I own 2 1994 integras also a GSR and an LS I have done the timing belts and adjusted the valves on them but that's basically it.

So here's my question, Spending the least amount of money but not half assing it what should I do?

1. Swap an OBD1
2. Search high and low for a reasonable OBD2 Longblock.
2. Rebuild for an all motor powerhouse.
3. Sell the car and not dick with it, Any offers? lol

The problem is all the swaps I have seen have a trans hooked to them, I would love to do a swap and throw a manual in it (the car is an autostick) but then where in the hell do I get the shifter linkage and pedals and etc... headache? Good luck finding that at the junkyard and I already checked ebay.

Do the Autosticks handle power well or are they ********?

And if you encourage me to build, let me know what parts you have in mind. I would want something built, but dependable for daily driving. I can do labor intensive things to keep the cost down.

I'm in Dayton if anyone has one.

Thanks in advance, all help is appreciated.

you can't do that. they have to scan your ecu or you fail.

OP:

Don't bother with the ATTS, you'd have to do a bunch of wiring and unnecessary crap to get it to work. Just get the halfshaft adapter from pirate, then sell the atts and atts trans.

You definitely have to use your obd2 components and engine harness, there is no way around it.

Too bad I dont know anyone that will pass me through emissions...

I'm not going to keep the existing transmission if I have a transmission with low miles and new clutch (stage 2) sitting around. Its easier for me to keep the transmission that actually goes with it and just negate the atts... besides, LSD will still work, only the atts will be disabled, correct?

It would cost me way too much money to keep my existing transmission, I would have to buy that halfshaft converter, stage 2 clutch ( the motor is BUILT, it will eat a normal clutch very fast), and plus the labor of disassembling the tranny and putting all that in...

I just did the swap a week ago. Here is how it worked, i have a 99 base with a blown engine (H22A4), picked up a jdm H22A here in Chicago for $900, since my car is OBD2 and the new engine was OBD1 i had to use the long block only, everything else was from my old engine, intake manifold, distributor, new (prefer) oil pump, CKP sensor, Crank balancer belt sprocket, Crank timing belt sprocket, lower timing belt cover, intermediate shaft and the thermostat. Very simple. I wish you good luck
