Default can water get into the fresh air vents?

no auto shops have been able to find the problem. minutes after driving my car in the rain, the inside of my car will develop a mildew/mold smell. i've checked for leaks and found none. the evaporator drain hose is working properly.

the moldy smell doesn't occur in dry weather and i run the ac on recycle mode continuously.

anyone know why there's a moldy smell inside my car during rains? is it even possible for outside water to get into an ac system?

Yes, it can. You'll want to clean out/replace your cabin air filter.

You know Matt, I have this exact same problem and I've replaced the filter 2x in 15,000 miles to no avail...

I've also heard a other EM2 owners with this exact problem. Be great if we could figure out where the hell the stench is coming from...

Maybe condensation is forming inside the vents themselves.

I would try shooting some Febreze down through the vents then, to try and lift some of the mildew smell. The bad thing about mold/mildew, is that the smell soaks into a lot of things.

lol i do it at work to all the nasty used cars. flip the vent to draw outside air, pour some order eating stuff down it, switch it back to recirrculate and spray it up into the vents from under the dash. do that 2 or 3 times and you should be set. well it wont smell like mold anymore.

when i turn on the heat, and SNOW comes flying out at us,
you know that there is moisture in there somewhere!

(Luckily, mold dies when it freezes!)

Default very strong mildew smell inside car after it rains

it happens every time it rains and lasts for 3 or 4 days. i've checked for leaks in the trunk and on the carpets. i haven't found anything.

the air from the ac vent smells fresh so i don't think it's from the ac system

does anyone know of any hidden places where water could accumulate?

Know that the bad smell can often start by going through a drive-through car wash with your air conditioner on the setting "intake from the outside." This allows water to be splashed in through the vents around the windshield wiper area. Either turn your air off or put it on the setting "re-circulate" so no outside dirty water can get into the air conditioning system.
