Default D15B Vtec Block D16Y8 Head

Hey guys I have searched up and down this thing but cant find anyone that has done this specific setup. I need to know what parts are needed to do this.

I have been told I need a z6 belt but others say a vx d15 belt
also in regards to the timing, ive been told that it will be off by one tooth unless I use a d15 cam gear. I really dont want a bent valve or a shitty runnning motor.

Also I heard that the d16y8 head has square combustion chambers which bump up the compression when its put on a d15b vtec block. Is this true?

I listened to a friend of mine and he just got done installing this setup into my girl's car since I didnt have the time to do it and he said he used the stock d15b timing belt.

I want to get this info before I pick the car up bc I need anything that isnt right to be fixed before I receive the car.

Give me all the input you guys have in regards to the requirements of this swap. Thanks!!

Yea, I tried asking for help too, not much support on putting a Y8 on any OBD1 92-95

Z6 Belt is the belt to use, VX is the incorrect belt.

I've never heard of a y8 head causing one tooth off on timing, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it, but again, never heard of it (I have heard that the VX Belt is 1 tooth too short, maybe someone used a VX Belt and blamed the head???)

Yes, A y8 Head will give higher compression than a Z6 and has more power in the mid-range than a Z6, but won't have as much potential up top as the Z6 does, if you want to build a NA Street/Track car, this is a great head to use on a D15 block, if you want boost, you may want to start looking for a Z6 head, if you are gonna stay NA and enjoy some decent reliable power, you have the right head for this build.

Tell your friend he doesn't know what he is talking about, replace the timing belt, no matter WHAT, its a $30 part from autozone and can help your motor last for hundreds of thousands of miles. A snapped belt at almost any RPM typically means the head is instantly toast, and it may toast the pistons too.

2 things to keep in mind you didn't mention, Dizzy and Head bolts.

a EG Vtec Dizzy will not bolt up to a Y8 Head, either you need to buy a Y8 Dizzy *IF you don't already have it* and look up the diagram to splice the wiring to an OBD1 Harness assuming you are staying OBD1

Also, to my understanding, the back left head bolt *The one by the Vtec solinoid* Has to be from a Y7/Y8 Head, the rest can just be the origional head bolts because the mounting hole on that corner is higher on the rest, while on a Z6 head it is not like that.

Hope I helped? I had to research for nearly a week to ensure I'm not gonna forget anything or expletive anything up when I do this to my 92 CX.

This is Ch3mik=

well I got the car back. He used the the D15b belt. Sits right. For some reason it feels slower.

The old setup of the d16y8 made 119whp / 99 ftlbs
mods:

stock p28
ebay intake
ebay header
ebay test pipe
2.25" exhaust

Im going to dyno soon and see some numbers. You think that maybe it just lost some top end?

just to clarify the setup now:

stock p28
00 D16y8 Head
96 D15b Block
y8 headgasket
d15 belt
ebay intake
ebay header
ebay test pipe
2.25" exhaust

wat are your opinions i think it needs a cam now

Now for clarification your block is a JDM D15B Block then right?

If its a regular Block, I hope you pulled the oil jet out of it because that will cause the Vtec not to engage, but won't trip a CEL.

Just FYI, it may be slower because of the .1 liter less displacement, and Cams are a waste of money unless you are boosted or have headwork done IMHO.

I don't fully understand the original setup. It was a D15B VTEC and the head went bad?

"It feels slower" is subjective and very vague. It has to be a really massive power loss for you to say conclusively that there's a problem. I have even witnessed cases where a car has lost power but the driver feels that it has more (worked in a dyno shop for a short time).

P28 was designed for a Z6. It will work on a Y8 but it's not going to be optimal.

If you shorten the exhaust, you push the peak power up higher in the power band, often up above the point that it is useable.

The d15b cam should be a better cam. More agressive, maybe thats why it feels slower

seems like i confused some peeps. sorry

heres the story

its a 90 crx si

I put a 00 d16y8 in it. Then just last week put in a setup consisting of a 96 D15B VTEC block and the head from the 00 D16Y8.

It is subjective though with the " it feels slower" Im sure it just feels different since the power band prob shifted. I did it for the square combustion chambers in the y8 as to bump up the compression. Plus I just remembered its runnnin a short ram intake now and not the CAI as before.

For some reason it feels like vtec isnt kickin in though. odd. no CEL though :/

Al la, the D15b cam is more agressive in vtec then the d16y8 cam. No idea why you would switch the d15b's head. The d15b is a better motor IMO, even tho the y8 has .1 liter on it.

Could I have thrown the d15 cam in the y8 head? would that have been better?

You should of just left the D15b head on. If you got the JDM D15b vtec, then just put the jdm d15b head backon. If you have the USDM D15 then just put the Y8 head on and takeout the oiljet in the block of the D15. The JDM d15B vtec cam is more agressive then the y8 cam. IMO the D15b should be the complete motor, wont notice a difference with a y8 head, maybe less power, different cam profiles.

Just put the JDM D15b head backon and call it a day

I thought you only needed to do that if it was a USDM block. can anyone clarify this?

I dont have the head anymore. : /

I mean, with the setup it is now, will it bump up compression though ? the dude said the y8 head has square combustion chambers so it should bump it more.

I ran the car today on an obd1 PR4 ecu and it ran way better this way. you guys think the block/head setup change is too drastic for the stock p28 ecu? im thinking of sending it off to phearable to get chipped. Its sad when the non vtec stock ecu runs better than the stock vtec one. lol.

Not too familiar with the d series engines, but from what it sounds like this:
If the motor runs better with the non vtec ecu than the vtec ecu, vtec must not be engaging? Are you sure you don't need to remove the oil jet as two people have suggested?

i keep thinkin bout that. it seems like it isnt hittin vtec bc when it goes into the higher rpms it feels like the power goes away. people say that this is only true on the non vtec 15 blocks but can anyone confirm that this doesnt also apply to the d15b vtec block? can I remove the oil jet easily even though its in the car?

im not a newb at hondas i just dont build many engines and dont do too many sohc setups. just mainly motor swaps and obd1 conversions.

Hey Ch3mik, once you get everything figured out, you want to do mine. I also plan on running a y8 head on my d15b. My only difference is I have a jdm non vtec and I'm running a p08 ecu.

Yes, just pull the head off, screw a screw into the oiljet and pull out, then reinstall the head.

Ok lemme get this stright,

You have:

JDM d15b vtec block
USDM d16y8 vtech head

Your problem is your motor feels weak right?

What ECU are you running?

Check compression?

Any unusual noises?

Hows Fuel/Spark?

No CEL's?

Check your plugs?

Run your system with seafoam

Also make sure you didnt accidently drop something in the intake mani or your intake mani gasket isnt blocking the intake ports.
