Default Timing Belt & Water Pump Questions

What's up all,

I have a 2000 Honda Accord SE VTEC with 95K+ miles on it. The owner's manual says to change the timing belt and water pump every 105k miles. From what I've been reading on this site, (and seems to make a whole lot of sense) I should have changed the timing belt and water pump at 90k miles. The rationale behind the early, preventive, service makes total sense (even though the owner's manual says 105k miles, the owner's manual also says to do an oil change every 7.5k).

I guess my question really boils down to this: where should I be purchasing my timing belt and water pump from? This site on eBay looks pretty legit and I'm seriously considering buy it ASAP, but want your feedback too.

If I were to get the equivalent parts from the Honda dealer I know it would cost a whole lot more. Would they be including all the items listed in the auction? If they were extra, (which they probably are) is it worth it? Please give me your advice.

Thanks in advance for answering my questions. When responding, please be sure to address all of my questions and concerns if you can.

90k is what is recommended for earlier year Accords. But it's never a bad idea to do it earlier than later.

If the parts aren't OEM from Honda then I wouldn't buy it. And those parts aren't OEM Honda.

You can piece that together buy ordering from Majestic Honda and pay less than if you were to go to a local dealership. That is where I've order all my parts if not from a local dealership. They have good prices too, really saves when you have a good size order.

You will pay more than that kit but it's worth it.

Now, if you dont already have one I recommend buying a Helm service manual. They are pricey but worth the cost, the money you'll save doing this job yourself will pay for the manual. I also did a write-up on how to replace the timing belt and water pump on an earlier year Accord 4cyl. A link can be found in the Accord FAQ sticky, that will give you a good idea of what is involved with the job.

spend the extra money and use Honda parts,, it is a small price to pay ,, you got to due it in another 7 years , not worth taking a chance with inferior parts when it comes to timing belts..

Timing belt, balance belt (if applicable), cam seals, crank seal, balance shaft seal and TSB retainer (if applicable), idler pulley and tensioner pulley, water pump and gasket, exterior accessory belts, paint marker for timing marks.

Do a complete engine flush with heater control valve open and radiator drain and flush, so 1 gallon antifreeze. If the timing covers have rubber gaskets between them and the block, clean them first and RTV them back on the covers so the RTV will be dry by the time you put the covers back into place.

On your engine, do you need to pull the valve cover to gain access the the top timing cover, if so, then you will need a valve cover kit and do you have a circle or half moon rubber seal at the distributor end on the intake camshaft for a dual cam engine (if you need to remove the valve cover).

Some parts cleaner for inside the timing cover and valve cover areas and some loctite for your nuts and bolts. Is it also time for an oil change, then 4 oils and a filter.

New cars gave longer limits on scheduled maintenance as a sales pitch, it made the car cheaper to maintain if you streached out everything to 105K or 7.5K. Bad idea.

EDIT
I looked at the ebay thing, I did not see a seal for the balance shaft and you may already have the retainer installed but you need it if it is not yet there. The pic looks like they pulled the water pump and gasket from the box and pulled the two pulleys from the boxes too. The valve cover kit is there, valve cover gasket, stud washers and spark plug hole seals.

I noticed that HAMP is available in the USA, look it up. Honda After Market Parts.

MORE EDIT
See if Sealed Power sells a kit too. If you have a single cam then the ebay listed an aux seal (balance shaft???).
