Default HELP!!! WTF IS THIS NOISE???? **WITH VIDEO**

watch the vid first!

The car is a 1990Si hatch with a Z6 swap.

The noise comes from the front passenger side.

so this has been a reoccurring problem now for a couple of months it used to happen only once a week or so, but now it occurs all the time, up to 3-5 times on a short trip.

it happens randomly, it has happened while taking a corner, on a bumpy road, on smooth roads, while going straight, while in 2nd-4th gears, usually between 2-5k rpm's, pretty much in any normal driving situation i have heard this noise. I have noticed that if im at cruising speed it happens too, but if i pretty much come to a near stop the noise will go away, if i speed up it gets louder.

I dunno im stumped, theres no belts on that side of the car so it cant be that, it cant really be a bushing (they are still the stock bushings) cause that would likely lead to a more constant squeaking and not a random noise like this, maybe its my shock itself? i dunno......

im running SKUNK2 Pro S coilovers, they were brand new when i installed them back in april.

any ideas?????

Sounded like it was correlated with engine speed, or maybe just vehicle speed.

When you're parked and you rev it up does it do it?

Does it go away at WOT?

Does the sound/pitch change when you go over bumps/take corners or otherwise compress/decompress the suspension?

It doesn't really sound like a belt, it sounds like something slower like something rubbing an axle, or wheel bearing? Wheel bearing noise doesn't really sound like that though IME. Dust shield rubbing the rotor?

Jack the car up, and inspect. Try to jiggle the wheel, see if there's anything rubbing the wheel/tire/rotor/axle/cv joints

No is does not do it while parked.

No it does not go away at WOT, that makes it worse most of the time, altho yesterday it did but only once...

No the sound does not change going over bumps, a bump can cause it though, but like i said before it happens while going straight on perfectly smooth roads

ive inspected it about a month ago and didnt notice anything rubbing, i jiggled the wheel around and got nothing. Im gonna get a tech to check it out at work, just thought id ask around first!

You might be on to something. That sound is identical to what I used to get.

I had this problem with a few of my old late 70's/early 80's GM G and D body cars.

But he stated the speedo is working fine. Whenever it happened to me, the speedo would be jumpy.

Might be worth looking into, grease up your speedo cable, see if it goes away.

And the dust ring on the backside of your hub could be the culprit too as someone just stated above.

Nah, that sound would be from an old cable that's no longer lubricated. But as I said earlier, it would probably cause your speedo to jump around.

dont think it could be, the noise is clearly coming from the front passenger side.

#4 you took the time to take the video, upload it, and post it here on h-t?

ya it happened randomly and infrequently before like once a week and the past few days its gotten 10X worse. the noise used to only last a sec or two so i thought nothing of it, figured it was a bushing or something. the only reason i made the vid was because i had my cam on me today so i made a vid on the way home. and yes ill be letting a tech look at it.

does the noise change or go away at all when you use the brakes?

that to me sounds like a bearing is shot only way that i know to test it is to lift that corner grab the tire and move top to bottom if the wheel seems loose than that's the source of the noise
