best tranny for H22A
i have heard rumors that the F22 trannies are better for accel and just better all around for the H22. i was wondering the truth in this because i have heard it from 2 different honda mechanics/tuners.
and if its truth which tranny is the BEST for the H22A motor?
Thanks

Haha what apllication are u talking about.....like a 500 whp lude thats built for top speed runs? The f22 is the lngest lude tranny and in turn is probally the slowest accelrator of the group. The m2b4? is the h22 tranny with lsd and is probally the quickest through the gears, but I know alot of people who like the m2s4(si tranny) paired with theyre h22's.
Ur mechanic/tuners might be talking about the best gas milage....but probally not the quickest gearbox....if they are, then find new mechanics/tuners to work on your prelude.

The shortest geared factory USDM tranny was the m2f4. It came on the 93-96 prelude vtecs. Jdm h22 trannies such as the M2a4 and M2b4 are a little bit different in gearing. I believe they are a bit longer in 4th and 5th. The shortest geared h22 tranny is from the accord euro r accord.
If you are gonna be running an NA setup shortest gearing is your best friend. Mfactory makes a 4.9 and a 5.2 final drive now I believe.
If you are going with a boost setup I think the m2a4 m2b4 are good selections. If its a little bit more powerful build an h23 tranny would suit it a bit better.

best depends on the application.
for NA, the EuroR tranny would be best as it has the shortest gears and accelerates the fastest.
for boost, i have no clue. I'm not a turbo kinda guy so you would be better of asking people with boost knowledge.

thanks thats some info i was looking for.
but not gas milage...what tuner cares about gas milage LOL. but yeah they specifically said it would help accel. which didnt make sense too me cuz i did the math on the gearing and found out its longer gears...which is normally slower accel.
for my application its a JDM H22A in a civic. i use it to drag race 1/4...right now it is BONE stock. (exhaust but that really doesnt count) the tranny is starting to go out. so im wondering get the F22 tranny for 100 i found...or order a new H22 tranny.
again im getting this info from a dealership mechanic...and a tuner that has one of the fastest honda's in the state. so u can see why i might trust the info.
thanks for your help

Since you already have weight on your side, get a jdm h22 tranny. They are pretty easy to find and are direct drop ins. Usually they run anywhere from 600-700 bucks in good condition.
You can buy a 5.2 final drive if you want to increase your 1/4 time significantly.

The H2B conversion is expensive compared to a h22 tranny and 5.2 final drive combo which would still be faster accelerating. Not mention considerably less expensive

it is all exspensive! yes. tahts why i was wondering what type of differences i would notice with teh F22...cuz i found one for $100. thats so hard to resist.
but i cant put anything to make the accel slower. this is my weekend play toy. and thats all i use it for is to race lol. i dont care about gas milage really, i only drive it weekends. i have a SOHC for better gas milage.

what makes the b series tranny so nice is that its designed to take the rev's of the smaller motors which aids the H22's that rev to 9k. I have yet to have issues taking my tranny to 8500, but i'd imagine i will eventually once the block goes in and it starts seeing 9k at the track.
We've answered your question about 5 times now. The f22 tranny is geared up higher= slower acceleration. h22 tranny geared down lower= faster acceleration. Stop beating the dead horse and read the responses.
If you want the ultimate choice in gear ratios, H2B is the answer, but may be out of your budget (you never really mentioned one)
The "quick-fix" would be to change your existing Final Drive which would net you anywhere between 10-20% increase in acceleration. These can be had for as low as $439.95

H2B is basically poor man's k20 swap...
I'm about to do the h2b in my CRX and then come the new year (tax time) I will be doing it in my civic as well.
Right now I have a b16 in my CRX. All I need is an H22 long block $400 here, and then the H2B kit which is $780 from QSD. I chose QSD because they are the original producers of the kit, and they utilize the b-series tranny, axles, intermediate shaft, flywheel, clutch, etc. Where as the Evolution H2B kit uses a "special" flywheel (meaning you can never use an oem b-series flywheel), you have to get custom axles (Evo H2B kit moves motor closer to passenger side for clearance). I do not mind sacrificing spacing my hood, or denting the frame rail a bit for clearance. QSD's kit has problems that are a ONE TIME FIX (hood spaced, dent in fram rail, grinding of block a little) where as the Evo kit has problems that are really reoccuring (ie snapping axles due to axle alignment not being correct). I would go with an H2B...but seeing as you already hacked up your chassis with the h22 mounts, it may be best to just stay with the h22 tranny...
H2B kit is great 'cuz you don't have to cut and re-weld mounts...
