anyone have a ski rack? where did you get? pix?
Does anyone have a ski rack on their FG? Where did you get it? Cheapest place to get it or know of one used? Anyone have pictures to what it looks like? Are others better or are they all same? Do you know if can use older ones and just get newer clips or something? thanks
Check craigslist. You can find them for really cheap at times. Here's some info on the Yakima system. I'm not too familiar with the Thule systems, but they shouldn't be too different. The Q clips are vehicle and chassis specific so your used rack may not come with them. You will probably have to buy them at a sports/outdoors store such as sports authority or rei. The attachments come separate so you can pick what ski, bike, etc mount you want. The roof of the civic is really wide so you can put lots of stuff on there as long as the total weight does not exceed 150lbs. As for fuel mileage issues, I have not noticed any drop in gas mileage. I am getting a consistant 29mpg 60/40 city/highway on a tank to tank basis. Wind noise, yes there is noticable wind noise, but youg et used to it or don't even hear it if you have your music up to a moderate level.
What you need:
4 Q Towers
pair of 58" crossbars (make sure they have decent endcaps to prevent moisture build-up inside the bars)
Q99 clips and landing pads (pads come with new box of clips)
Q131 clips and landing pads (pads come with new box of clips)
Optional:
SKS locks (highly recommended as theft deterrent, but rack and components can be installed without them)
58" fairing (wind deflector)
Q-stretch kit (optional for the 2dr because of it's short roof, lenghtens the distance between the front crossbar and the rear crossbar, not necessary unless you plan on loading a kayak, canoe, surfboard, or anything super long)
Here are a few pics of the rack mounted on my car. The bars were 58" long, but they stuck out the sides too far so I trimmed them down 3" on each side or 6" total per bar. That's a 58" fairing and a Yakima Big powerhound ski/snowboard rack.
