Default B16 CRX problem...

Well I have been searching and problem solving since I got the car a month ago.
But can't seem to figure out how to fix my remaining problems...

My car is an 89 CRX with a first gen b16a.
VTEC doesn't ingage.
No codes, car heats up fine, and have checked the VTEC soloniod and cleaned it out.
(haven't checked oil pressure yet though)

Next problem is the car redlines at 7200rpm.
Running a PR3 ECU.
And still not getting any codes.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

check speedo and crazy as it may seem make sure your valve cover is down tight and were your bolts hold down the cover make sure they got the ruber washer under the nuts for the vavle cover are all there and tight.

My speedo doesn't work.
But I was told its because there is something wrong with the cable going into the tranny...
Would my speedo not working cause all of these problems?

And all of my bolts on my valve cover are nice and tight and I have all the rubber seals.

Also did a search for limp mode but nothing came up.
I don't think the ECU is in limp mode though.

I'm also getting a hesitation at different revs through all my gears.
Then sunddenly it stops and it feels like I have full power again.

Well I fixed my speedo today.
And it works now.

But it doesn't seem to have fixed anything.
Still has the hesitation.
And vtec still doesn't seem to work.
(didn't take it up to high though on the way home)

Anyone have any more ideas on what it might be?

Thanks.

do you have 2 working oxygen sensors in the right place if you have an aftermarket header? that could be causing the hesitation.

OK so I went for a little drive saturday night.

Still no vtec.
Still has a small hesitation.

Redline is higher now though.
And I'm not throwing any codes.

But she pulls really really well.

Any more ideas?

Just need these 2 things sorted out then I can work on other things on the car.

So I'm still having some of the same problems.
I changed my speedo cable.
Changed my wires, cap, and rotor.

I am getting no codes.

The car has a hesitation while I drive a constant speed.
But when I accelerate it seems fine.

Also it 'sounds' like my VTEC is hitting at 4250RPM.

None of this is making sence to me anymore.
And I can't seem to figure out what the problem is.

Any more help would be nice.
Thanks everyone.

you said it revs higher now. if it revs to 8,000 then vtec is activating and you just arent realizing it

hey bro i have a 91 crx wit b16a, my car has some of the same problems, my v tec comes on at like 4500 rpms, i have my car chipped an im runnin turbo edit, i have a pr3 an on my ecu map it says my car vtec comes on at like 5 or 6 thousand rpms but it comes at 4500, im thinking the crx rpm gauge is number at a deffirent range. My car also bogs down when im at a constant speed on the highway. The only thing i can think of is your idle valve that your manifold has. I already checked my injectors an there good, i changed my fuel filter, so dunno what else it could be??? maybe we need some other kind of injectors?? an did you check on both of your gaskets on your top an bottom silonoids????

I thought vtec wasn't kicking in on my b16 crx also when I 1st did the swap. Hooked up a test light and sure enough it was working just couldn't hear it or feel it until I changed out the stock exhaust. Big difference after that, still doesn't kick in like I want but heard obdo b16 don't kick in vtec that hard though.

My redline is sometimes at 8200RPM.
And then other times 7500RPM.

I have a stock exhaust mani.
The cat is punched out.
And all the piping is like 2.5" with an APEX'i muffler.
It's crazy loud...so I may not be hearing it when it kicks in.
Although it sounds like it hits around 4250RPM.

I checked all the gaskets on my vtec soloniod.

But vtec is supposed to hit at 5600RPM right?
Or 5800?
Or somewhere around there.

So lets ignore the vtec right now because it may be working and I just don't realize.
(this is my first vtec Honda remember)

I just want to know about the bogging out on highways etc.

Did you wire your O2's yourself?? Tell me what wire you put to what terminal on your ecu???
redline should be 8200
vtec should kick at 5k

AND YES YOU FEEL IT CAUSE IT PULLS ALOT HARDER AND GET LOUDER!!!

Check your o2's
Check vtec selnoid
Check vtec oil pressure switch
check knock sensor

Also hesitation i had was caused by my tps. I used a voltmeter and adjusted it properly. Hesitation went away. I had no CEL either

yea that whole extra 10 ft/lbs really just throws you into your seat

Have you checked your oil level? low oil or too much oil will also cause your car to run like ****... not persay a hesitation tho....
