Yeah, I didn't want an iPod either. I ended up getting an iRiver H320 on ebay really cheap, and I put in a 30GB hard drive from ebay and a new battery, and it's been great. It's not the most attractive player, but I don't really care. Next, I'm going to try loading "Rockbox" firmware on it.
Unfortunately, it doesn't have any kind of docking connector like the mainstream players.
What I can't figure out is why all the competitors don't just use iPod docking connectors, and make their protocols compatible. This would give them access to all the 3rd-party iPod accessories, like powered speakers, car docks, etc. It's not like there's any patents blocking them (the connector is actually made by a Japanese company, and can be purchased from Mouser or Digi-Key electronics distributors), and the protocol is a simple serial control protocol (for controlling volume, track selection, etc.). If I were trying to compete with the iPod, that's what I'd do.
