Do they make wireless GPS for cars?
Might be a silly question, i'm not to hip to the latest and greatest.
I want to put an aftermarket GPS system in my car, (tom tom/garmin etc) and I'll be mounting it in my cubby below my stereo controls. Do they make a wireless unit that will allow me to do this without having to run wires to the receiver on the rear deck/roof?
if so, what models are available?

Are you nixing the idea of running an antenna to your dash? but you might look into one that as bluetooth and see if they can accept satellite info from a bluetooth receiver. THis is how i get GPS info on my palm 700w cell phone.
yea, I guess im just trying to get around running a wire from my attenna to my GPS unit. Kind of lazy i suppose, but figured id ask.
with the bluetooth units, how is the attenna powered?

Portable GPS's don't have an external antenna. It's built into the unit.
You can either plug the power into the cig lighter or hardwire it.

This is true..But i know for some if not all of the garmin units you can buy an external antena. I know this because this is how we have it setup in our excursion.

Most of them use rechargable LI (lithium ion) batteries that give about 30 hours of battery life, but they (atleast the ones im looking at) come with a cig charger and home charger..But i have no idea whether or not this will work with any portable GPS unit on the market. But worth investigating
let us know what you come up with

and the final question:
If portable GPS units dont have a seperate external antenna, If i were to mount it in my lower cubby (not in the window/dash) would it still receive the appropriate signal from the satallites?

Probably not... You could, however, do a stealth mount of the antenna on the dash or the rear deck and it would probably work just fine.

Some yes some no..It depends on the sensitivity of the of the internal antena, but i wouldnt recomend it. If i were you i would buy a garmin unit that can support an external antena and stealth mouth it like b18 said, than all you would have to do is plug it in and go.
