'94 Prelude Timing Belt Change Info
Hello !
I am contemplating changing the timing belts on my '94 Prelude. Are there any tips people can give me? Is the crankshaft nut a sod to untighten? Can you lock the engine by putting in gear (rather than using the special 50mm open socket thing?
Any advice appreciated!
Cheers,
Garth.

If you are leaving the engine in the car and you have the someone to help. You can put the car in gear and have your friend put on the breaks and hold it until you loosen the bolt.
honestly, i tried every trick in the book to keep engine from moving when doing my t-belt (including someone else standing on the brakes with the car in gear) and after 2 weeks of failure, i finally broke down and bought the crank pulley holder tool. came off in 5 minutes
the easiest way to remove the crank pulley bolt is with a good impact, if you know someone with one that is... if you feel cheap, see if a local shop would loosen it for you??? 2nd easiest way is with the 50mm tool, but that didnt always work for me.
O.K., Stamping on the brakes didnt work, no way. I'm going to try an impact gun on Saturday.
By the way - is the crank bolt left hand thread??? Doesn't mention it in the manual unless 'special' bolt means left hand thread.
Cheers,
Garth.

At times it seems like it must be threaded the opposite way, but it isn't. Just stuck on like a bitch.

yeah, do yourself a favor and check the crankshaft sensor and make sure it's in good working order. I'd hate to see someone put all that crap back together, then realize it's bad, yay!

I found this to be the best way to do it too. It keeps the crank from turning when you're removing/installing the crank pulley too. What I mean is that if you try to use the brakes, the crank moves a fair amount while you torque it. I don't like the crank turning against the bearings with all that torque being applied to the crank pulley bolt.

Guys,
Finally loosened the crank bolt tonight. Needed to make a crank pulley holding tool, and had an 18" Snap-On wreecking bar pushed by foot. After about 10 minutes shoving and kicking, the bolt loosened a bit. The forks on the joint of the Snap-On bar were flexing like mad, but it did the job in the end.
If we hadn't made the crank tool - not a prayer of loosening it.
Cheers,
Garth.

Guys,
I'm goint to change the belts this afternoon - is there a good procedure to adjust tension on the belts, or is it a case of releasing tension, removing the belts and then just letting the springs do their job?

Garth.

If you have an H23, use this procedure since he converted to the manual tensioner. It's towards the end of the write-up:
