Default Loud static on stereo - cannot be turned off

Greetings.

I have a 2003 Accord LX 4-door with about 42k miles. Yesterday while driving, I heard a loud static from the left dashboard speaker. Loud static now comes from all speakers and cannot be turned off using the volume control, unless the car is shut down and restarted, sometimes more than once. When I am able to turn the static off, neither the radio or the CD work.

What are the possible causes to this? What are my options? The car is out of warranty by about 15 months/6k miles.

Many thanks.

I forgot to mention that the stereo in (my wife's) Accord is absolutely bone stock. No modifications whatsoever. Thanks,

probably have a blown speaker then. Replace that first then re-check it. hopefully nothing was shorted in the head unit. That thing is VERY expensive

Not tryin to contradict you Evil Monkey but to the OP, you could disconnect the speaker first to see if the noise goes away before you buy a new one

Are instructions for disconnecting dashboard speakers available on-line by any chance?

Made an appointment with a dealer, they had it diagnosed. The result: Honda is sending a new head unit, will goodwill the cost and the repairs.

Thanks for everybody who pitched in with the information. Glad I found this forum.
