Oil Question
Hello all. I did a search and could not find out the answer to my question. My 97 EX has 170,000 miles on it and has developed a top end tick, especially when cold. It sounds like the lifters are not pumping up enough to take out all the valve clearence. Anyhow, my question is will 5w30 still provide sufficient oil pressure to everything, including the lifters, with this many miles on it? Keep in mind I don't know much on the history on the car, except everything seems clean and well maintained? I've seen most people recommend the 5w30 regardless of the mileage, but I also seen a few progressively go to a heavier weight oil as the car accumilates miles. I always use Castrol oil with a Pure One filter and I was thinking of trying 10w40 this go around. My son's Sentra SE-R also recommends 5w30 but we have went to 10w40 in it (143,000 miles) because he runs it hard plus it seems to like this weight better. Just don't want to mess with the Vtec or anything else oil pressure controlled.
Didn't think the F22B1 (Vtec) had a valve lash adjustment, but I could be wrong. I have seen the adjustment procedure for the F22B2s but not the F22B1s.....
Eyah. For anything valve related... take it to a shop. I did a valve adjustment, exact to spec. And 3 months later it dropped a valve.
If you did that, and then maybe got you some good oil, Royal Purple, Amsoil, you'd probably be ready for a lot more miles on that F series.
Mine was a lot better for the 3 months it worked.

You need to adjust the valves. Unless you have an early V6 you DO NOT have hydraulic lifters. The car has a rocker arm that rides directly on the camshaft and the other side actuates the valve, it pivots in the middle.
You can adjust the valves on every Honda car (Except the exhaust valves on the 95-97 Accord V6.)

Thank you! I am new to Hondas and just seen the write ups on the non-vtec F22B2 and it did not include anything on the vtec F22B1s. I'll do this on my next set of off days. I guess they adjust to the same clearances??????

I guess you learn something new every day, huh?? I do believe it sets at the same clearances .026mm intake, .030mm exhaust. I'll be getting a new gasket and get them set here shortly, probably this weekend. Thanks again!
Oh, by the way, would you still use 5w30 weight oil at the miles I have, 170,000+?
