the oil is used to attract air molecules. its just not gonna work as well if you dont oil it

I believe the filter comes pre-oiled. Then when you clean the filter you need to apply oil again

I did not know you had to reapply oil on the filter. I have an Injen CAI on my 03 protege 5 and I haven't cleaned it since I bought it 9 mos ago. Do you have to do that on all of the aftermarket filters or just certain brands?

Certain brands, all the new AEM's have a Dry Flow air filter that you dont have to oil, Im not sure if there are any other brands that use the same technology.

You only need to reapply oil if you clean the filter. If you don't clean the filter you will slightly lose performance however depending where you live and if you have a short ram intake or cold air intake the difference could be minimal.
