Default Acceleration problem with 97 LX

Hey all, looking for a little help here...

My buddy has a 97 Civic sedan (LX, automatic tranny) and he's having an issue with acceleration.

When he steps on the gas pedal, initially the car takes off okay, but at a higher speed (around 40~50mph) the car will hesitate (almost as if he let go of the gas pedal) and then crawls (slowly) up to speed. It's like you have to wait for something to kick in.... He took it to the dealer awhile ago, and they advised it was a manifold problem and then proceed to "repair" it. (I believe he said the dealer repair/replaced something with the intake manifold).

It worked fine for some time, but the problem has since returned. Any help or suggestions on what we should check out next? Thanks in advance.

I am having a similar problem on a 97 manual lx. I made a thread and i was told it is the ignition control module or the ignitor as it is sometimes refered as. It is inside the distributor.

So you reset the ECU but that didn't fix the issue? What about that ignitor part you mentioned? Any fix on that? thanks....

Yep, reset the ecu but it still did the same thing. Thought my coil was bad but i replaced that and no fix. Havent had time to mess with the ignitor yet as i was working all day. Ill update you when i put it in. Hopefully today (tuesday).

Update, my buddy confirmed the dealer replaced/repair the exhaust manifold (not the intake, as I had originally stated).

Hittnthebz, any new updates?

There's no way his header had to be repaired or replaced, The car would have been loud as hell and not had any kind of hesitation problem, they probably just flashed the ECU and gave it back to him.

He got ripped, have him take back the car to the dealer, there are laws in place to protect him from **** like that.

stock dx/lx exhaust manifold always crack, so i bet it did need to be replaced.

But i think he was talking about the intake manifold

This would definitely go along with the ignitor(ICM) being the bad part.

I didnt get to yet, had way too much going on. Hoping tomorrow (again).

you gotta get the timing right otherwise your car will run good at low speeds then start acting like a pig under heavy acceleration like the harder you push on that gas pedal, the more resistant to deaccelerate your car will have.
I've had issues with that too. Turned out my timing was bad and had a clogged cat. That's why i kinda gave out that answer.
