Default Problems with my 89 sedan: Honda Tech Help

Was driving the car all day; then i started to notice a burning plastic smell,
or could have been burning wires- not sure. anyway smoke started
to billow from the steering column. not alot of smoke, but steam like
shall we say...
obviously something was melting or burning or my car was going to ignite,
and im lucky to get out alive but who knows...

Never-the-less i tried to start the car later and the car will not stay started;
meaning it turns over and pretends to start but does not stay on.

Any help will be rewarded with a reach around and some keystone.

edit- (i proof read and fixed some mistakes- not all just some)

I do not know where to start. But if that were my car first thing to do is open the steering column covers and check for a plastic burn smell. Second check the igntion system.
