Begginer Question Troubleshooting
Hi There. Just a quick question. When my 93 civic coupe is moving or stationary, if I turn the stearing will there is loud metal on metal screeching sound. If I jack the car up to see where the sound is coming from doesn't make the screech. I know that's a pretty subject if question and it's not swapping for a B16 but, it would help me alot if anybody had any idea's. I was thinking it was the lower ball joint and was going to try to replace it. I have already review how that's done but just wanted somebodies opnion before I tackle that. Thanks very much.
Since nobody here can hear the noise your best bet is to turn the wheel and have someone listen and pinpoint the noise. Otherwise we'll be throwing out a bunch of guesses all day which won't help.
What you need to do is jack it up again and grab the tire at 9 o'clock and 3 and wiggle it back and forth. This will test the tierod ends and steering rack.
Then grab the wheel at 12 and 6 and wiggle. That will test the upper and lower ball joints.
What I mean by wiggle is push with one hand and pull with the other and do it a few times.
If you find any play then there you have it.
What you might need to do is jack the car up using the lower a-arm to keep it at ride height.
