carbon fiber hood? hood pins or no hood pins???
ok got a carbon fiber hood on my 4gen...i really dont like the hood pins..but im really scared that my cfh open at the middle of the freeway and busts my windshield and my roof...ive seeen it happen...how many of u guys have this happened to u? why does it happen? im driving my car to work and back ( 90 miles round trip ) so thats why im a little bit worried...is it easier for a cfh to bust open than a regular hood?
i pulled a
move on an old car of mine. i didn't close my hood all the way. you know, when its popped open but still latched. totally forgot. was doing ~75 on the freeway, was passing someone and BLAM it flipped it, bent to form to the roof, and completely shattered the windshield. windshield did its job though and stayed intact, and i pulled an ace ventura over to the shoulder. scared the living **** outta me.
cheap insurance indeed, and definitely function > form.

i have a oem design painted CF on my 5g, and when i first bought it the hood latch was bent bad from a minor wreck, so when i was traveling to and from raleigh nc to charlotte, 150 miles one way at 90 MPH the hood was beating up and down, but didnt blow. it was really unsafe and dumb of me (since fixed), but it stayed. now that its 100% secure, i dont plan on the pins. id say from experience to skip them, and i personally think they really detract from the apperance of the car. if the hood is of good quality, its not going to blow off

the quality of the hood has nothing to do with it. if your vehicle is going to be traveling at a high rate of speed, you want insurance. the air moving past the lip of the hood has a considerable amount of force to it.
what experience is telling you to skip them?

I have only hood pins on my 4th gen. My hood latch was so bent when I bought the car, I just have not replaced the latch yet. Its good to 140mph though like it is.
I prefer the ones with the actual key lock on them. One, its a second step in keeping people from going under your hood, and two the key lock type actually seem a lot less noticeable. The circular key hole is much smaller than your average loop and pin. Best part is, you can buy them at your local AutoZone for a decent price.
Hood pins look horrid, why not make sure your hood is closed properly before setting off? Additional rubber stripping on the underside edge should counter the influx of wind pressure would it not? Im looking into getting a kevlar hood on mine, adding gas struts and additional rubber seals underneath. Hood pins are just too ghetto for my baby.
Along with hood pins, one of these will help. Either get it from FM or make your own

my opinion: hood pins. or don't get a cf hood.
If you choose to get a cf hood and no hood pins, definitely get a seibon

the experience that i have one that hasnt blown off yet without hood pins. and see my first post, that story, and it still didnt blow off
i could never go fast enough to make my hood blow off. It DOES have to do with the quality, because its of good enough quality (In the sense that is constructed exactly to be the same as OEM) that the only situation it is going to blow off is if i was doing something bad enough to make the stock hood come off. dont be a smartass

heres the way i look at it....your going to spend that much money on a cf hood why not make SURE its safely attached to your car. + if something does happen and it for some reason flies up you are jeopardizing your safety and others. make the right decision on these things even if it doesn't appeal to you. id rather not lose my entire car because of an accident caused by my hood just because it "didn't look as clean".

if im spending the money i'd expect it to fit exactly like OEM, when was the last time you heard of an OEM hood flying up?? and what speeds do you perceive to be travelling lol its a prelude not a Lear Jet.
If its a good quality fitting hood, and is properly adjusted and gapped up, i cannot for the life of me wonder why on earth it would fly up. If it did, i'd be suing the maker for defective product.

lets see difference in weights comes to mind as a reason... latches can give way if there is enough wind pushing under it... whatever do what you guys really think is the right thing to do. im just giving my input on precautions i would take on something thats $500.
for an OEM style hood, hood pins would be very important to have. I know after driving off after installing that kind of hood I was nervous as hell once I got on the highway. However, if going with an invader or vented style hood, the updraft created from under the car won't be strong enough to cause much hood lift/shake.
sooo...
OEM style = hood pins are recommended on 4th gens (sparco, don't cheap out!)
Invader/Vented = no hood pins necessary.

I really need to get some as well. My hood likes to lift it seems.
Its kind of ricer I guess, but I also did the hood rise in the rear. For the cowl effect, it seems to get a lot of turbulence. I took it off for now til I get some pins, but I would definitely recommend it just like most here have said.

maybe cuz its not oem.....suing isnt gonna do **** but make you look like an idiot for trying to sue someone who makes aftermarket parts......
CF hoods are approx 30 lbs lighter than OEM hoods, which makes them more vulnerable to turbulence. turbulence puts pressure on the OEM hood latch. If that latch breaks, you cant say **** to insurance about it because you are the dumbass who didnt take the precationary measures of making sure the hood didnt fly up. Just because it is "oem" style does not make it OEM.
get you **** together. Take that to a lawyer and he will laugh at you.....i would atleast.
