What's up dudes.
So.. been saving up for a B18B off hmotors.. i see that the JDM GSR changeover is $800 more... but that's not legal here. Looks like a fine deal though.
In california, is it the JDM ECU that is the deal-breaker for smoggability? or does a JDM motor have different smog equipment on top of a different ECU?
Basically, can i go grab that GSR JDM changeover and convert it later, when my smog check is due?
FYI i have a 1999 Civic so i'm ODB2. Would a 96-97 motor be OBD2?

yes, OP knows that. if you read his post he states that he was looking at the getting an ls (B18B), but the price difference of a GSR is only 800 more.
and for the OP, the ecu is one component of making sure you would pass smog. there are some small things you would need to add to be able to REF/smog a JDM GSR swap, but it can be done. and any swap 96 or newer would be obd2

My GSR swap is legal, and a bunch of other peoples that ive done is legal. Who keeps telling people JDM motors are illegal.
You need 99-01 GSR swap, all your stock emissions equipment. If its JDM you may need USDM oil pump, and crank sensor and of course the stock USDM ecu without immoblizer (or do the SI trick). Its not hard.

I gotta get a 99+ motor huh.. pain in my ***. hmotors doesn't sell that. I would have to piece that **** together wouldn't i.. luserkid, if you know anyone who can get me a 99+ motor + trans + misc... pm me
otherwise i'll stick to the original plan: LS engine w/GSR transmission and maybe turbo..

In a word...YES
To the OP...i found this in the FAQ's at the top

there is lots of other stuff on it as well (that link is for a JDM ITR but should give you an idea)

You don't have to use the USDM oil pump. You can bypass the crank fluctuation sensor using this trick here:
http://technet.ff-squad.com/ckftrick.htm
That will allow you to run a USDM GSR ECU with your motor and not throw any CELs. That will allow you to pass the OBD2 scan tool they use.
You may need to bypass the VTEC Pressure Sensor, too:

AFAIK, as long as you have all the emissions devices on your car functioning, the engine you get is the same year as the chassis or higher, and you are using a USDM ECU, there is no reason why you wouldn't pass BAR.
I live in AZ and we don't have the tough laws Cali has, but they do check for emissions here. If you are OBD2 and above, they plug your car into their scan tool to monitor the readiness of your emissions sensors and any CEL codes. I own a 99 Honda Civic EX (OBD2B) and I swapped in a JDM B18C OBD1 motor. I have a conversion harness to run the JDM OBD1 ecu. When I take my car to get tested for emissions, I switch out my ecu with a USDM OBD2a ecu (OBD2B ECUs have an immobilizer). I performed the CKF bypass trick on the OBD2B-to-OBD2A conversion harness. I don't get any CELs and I'm able to pass emissions with their scan tool here in AZ.
I used to live in Cali and I can verify for certain that I have personally seen many of friends' JDM B18C swaps pass BAR. However, I must say that of the ones I have seen BAR certified, they went ahead and switched their oil pumps over to USDM. Some refs are very thorough and will check to make sure every sensor is there.
FWIW, if you can afford the extra dough, get the B18C, you'll be much happier.

Yea bypassing those sensor are fine provided you dont want to BAR your motor. If you want to BAR your motor you wont pass visual with the bypass.
HMO sells 99-01 USDM/JDM engine, you have to call and talk with Steve.
