Default 89 civic oil burning?

Hello all I am new to this forum and have a ? to ask. I have an 89 honda civic 1.5 w 5 speed tranny dx.It has 177k miles on her and still runs great. They only problem is that is goes through oil. It doesnt smoke or leak any oil.Is there any way I can check to see if the valves need to be replaced or maybe the rings. Is this common for this motor?Would it be easier to replace the motor with an attarco motor. Looking for some options for my new honda.Any info would help

What's up Noob Welcome to H-T. The 1.5 is going through oil. May be time to rebuild it. Do you want to do this. There is a DIY thread to rebuild the d15. It would be easier to replace motor what is your goal for power or fuel ecomony.

Wow, you answered nothing.

You can do several test such as compression or leak down. However it does sound like you have either a issue that will require some type of work to be done on the motor. How much oil are you going through? Do you have any smoke coming out the back?

You might want to check your PCV valve. If it sticks it can suck the oil right out of it. I lost a quart in 50 mi. because I tried to clean it.

Don't clean it just get a new one.

It burns about a 1/4 of a quart every 144 miles. I am looking for fuel economy. I just purchased it and it looks like it has a brand new pvc valve in it. It passed smog with no problem but it does have small black water droplets comming out of the exaust when I start it up. Its like condensation comming out the tail pipe but black almost like its running rich but still get 40 mpg. Once it warms up it stops.
Attarco motor is a used japanese motor with 30k miles on it.

Wow a guy with 40 post calling some one a noob... any way have you been under the car and checked the pan gasket and main seals? 1/4 quart is a decent amount and if its leaking there will be signs of it under neath for sure, also you dont have to see smoke for it to be burning a little oil. 177k is getting up there on miles more so if the car was reved hard often. I wouldnt think the rings would be suspect at this point i would suspect valve guides and or seals. do a cmpression and leak down test for giggles any way.

Ok I know how to do a compression test but I dont know how to do a leak down test. Can you explain to me on how to do that. The car leaks only a tiny bit of oil out of the pan.Still very dry underneath. Every time I park it I dont see any oil on the ground.Thank you for all the help by the way.

I will try a compression test on my day off and see where I am at. I check the oil every day because of the amount of miles I put on my vehicle. She gives me great gas mileage and keeps on going. The only reason I want to get another motor is because I do put on an enourmous amout of miles on my cars and want to make sure I have a reliable non burning vehicle. Thank you guys for all the help. (just a thought) What would an easy swap be as far as wireing and boltin up with only no or little modification.
