Just sold my R, must have another one!
Ok, about a week ago I sold my 98 R. I sold it for many reasons, mostly to pay off some credit card debt (it was a side car). Now I'm missing the hell out of it, and considering selling my daily driver (05 jeep wrangler unlimited) to finance another R. I figure I can satisfy my speed/track urges with my DD, not just a "side car."
I am just very skeptical about using an R as my daily driver. I would only drive it in the nice months, and leave the winter to my other lifted Jeep and the R would definitely be babied. I want a car that I can have fun hooking up and playing with, and do some autocross and trackdays, but still be daily driven. I'm looking at maybe another R, or a WRX, or maybe a BMW E36 M3. I would enjoy tracking the R more than any of those....
I would worry about theft and haters. I can deal with the haters, but I am in Montgomery County, MD (for those who know). There are a lot of Mexicans (not to be racial, just stats) who love hondas, and love R's even more. I know there's a lot of you on here who drive your R's daily. I would worry a lot about thieves, even though the R would be garaged. Any wisdom for me?
Thanks

I've had my car for about 2 years and nothing bad has gone wrong. I do the basic things like keep it in the garage. But the thing with my car is that it's rarely driven. I drove her about 5000 miles in 2 years. I think what keeps my car safe is that, it gets very little exposure on the street where people can see it. I never take it to the movies. I've taken it to the mall about zero times. But I've taken her out sometimes on a nice day or nice occasion (like dinner).
I live probably 30mins from you so this is pretty relevant. I've been tossing the idea of selling her because perhaps someone else can enjoy driving her. I'm almost certain I want to sell her now. Just a few nights ago, my GSR was stolen. Good thing it wasn't the R, but that's because no one knows I have it.
I thought theft was dying around in this Greater Metro Area but I'm not sure if it really has. You may not want to drive her 5 days a week, but Friday and Saturday would be great days to take her out and scretch her legs.
Hope this helps.

Unless you live in Montana or Alaska I think theft will always be an issue with these cars. Exactly why I will be selling my 98 soon which I just bought about 6 weeks ago. I've realized its not worth being scared that its going to be stolen. I can now say I've owned one...just not long.
I just got mine, with the understanding that I could not afford a second car and that my R would be my daily. Granted like I said I just got mine, but I'm of the viewpoint that a caR is meant to be driven.... there's only so many things you can do to prevent theft. So do as much as you can to protect it (lojack, alarm, quickrelease with lock, fuel cut off switch if you so choose, etc etc). I would just be careful where you choose to leave it, such as malls, etc.
Good luck if you get another one!

I thought someone would bring that up. Mexicans aren't the only ones who like Hondas. I was saying that in larger (lower-salary) Mexican communities, more people want their cars to be sick like rice, and these people would be more inclined to steal parts or the whole car. I'm not racist, I swear
Thanks for all the input. I was thinking maybe I can remove the spoiler and debadge it, but it would still be sexy enough to be a beacon to theives...unless I get a beat up one and spray paint it. lol
I'll have time to think, I need to pay off my credit cards first....

lol. It's just the truth, man...
Sorry to hear about your teggy exies. I plan on doing all kinds of things to my next car, so insurance wouldn't cover any goodies. Don't know if I want to risk theft...
I'm starting to lean towards a WRX. Would make a great DD, and they're pretty badass.

Yea, I do have a lifted Jeep (beside my DD), so I'm a little more flexible there. I can always drive one while I'm doing something to the other.
Now I'm starting to lean towards the R, lol. I'll just shut up and think.

Jut like Exies, I garage mine and enjoy it very discreetly....unfortunately. Im in Moco too, and although I feel relatively safe driving it around, I would also not take it to any public places. I feel paraniod just letting it sit in the driveway for a bit.
Good luck on getting your R but just make sure you have your garage and DD ready before the purchase. Thank god for the tracks because its really not all that fun just tootin round town. Bring it to E8!

Yea, that's the same program I tried when I owned my last R. It will have to be a fall-back DD because my Jeep does break down a lot (310,000 miles), so I'll just have to make sure I get some badass anti-theft in there.
If I am in country (probably won't be), I will definitely make it to expo 8 next summer, R or not. Do you do track days/autoX, etc??

That's what I'm thinkin now, just need to check on the rental rates on places with garages.
Man, I know you love being stationed in Japan. Thanks for your service.

I finally made up my mind to sell my Jeep and buy another R. I already have one in mind in the South
Hopefully this time I will have money for fun instead of restoration.
Help fund my R, if you know someone who wants an '05 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, let me know. As soon as it's sold, it's go time, BABY!

Bought the car in April of 2004 with 65000 miles. Being a college student, this is my one and only car that i drive.
Now, still have it just turning 130000 miles this week and i have loved every mile of it. Just be smart when it comes to parking and leaving it overnight. Ive had mine vandalized and had a few scares hearing my alarm go off at night, but luckily *knocks on wood* thats been it so far. Just have full coverage for the "in case ****" happens.

Sounds fairly safe. Where do you live?
