Default FIT Valve (Fast Idle Thermo Valve)

Question for someone who knows about the FIT. The Chilton book states that if you take the top cap off of the valve when the car is cold, you should feel air with your finger. Once warm, you should not. My question is, is this true if you push gently on the copper colored plunger like you are unseating the valve or should there be air there without having to push it down. The part is about $90 so I don't want to buy it unless I have to. Also, if I don't replace it, what is the deal since it doesn't seem to be hurting anything now.

Yes, this is true. If you push the plunger it should stop the flow of air. Acting as thought the valve is up to operating temperature.

Why did you investigate the FIT valve if you were not experiencing any problems?

If your not having any idle issues then you should be good to go without replacing the valve. I ran my 96 with the FIT valve blocked off for the past two years. The car idled fine even in -30c weather.

Just doing some PM type stuff and noticed that there is no air felt when starting up cold. I have a rough idle sometimes so I am just probably going to pull the FIT and the IAC and clean them real well. Nothing is wrong, which is why I don't really want to buy the part.
