I recently purchased a 97 Accord EX Sedan. The rear power door locks will not operate with the front switches. You can here the motors in the rear attempting to work though. Is there a trick that I am overlooking? Also the exterior passenger side door lock will attempt to unlock all with the key, while the drivers side will not. Are these related?

Honda door lock problems are many, if you cannot borrow a friends door (main) switch assy then this sounds like the place to start, the actuator in the drivers door has a history also, but to answer one point you made, all the doors feed back to the main switch, thats why I feel it is the place to start.

 

I took the door panel off yesterday and I am totally lost. I am taking it out today and letting a Honda guy look at it. My window motor is also giving me fits. I just bought the car a week ago and the previous owner claimed to have a new motor in the drivers side. I seems to be binding on something or it is bad. Only goes down partially and then shuts down.
What is the black box in the drivers door that says ABS?? I have an ABS light on as well and wondered if all these problems are related.

well for one, u may fix ur window problem now but its gonna come back again later on. i have replaced my front driver window motor and regulator about 4 times in 6 years. i fixed it last year and now the window is going up slow and my front passenger window wont go up or down lol. i have replaced the switches twice which cost a friggen fortune. and now my rear passenger side power door luck neither unlocks or locks when i hit the switch, it just makes this akward noise.

the driver door key hole only opens the driver door.
the passenger door key hole opens all of the doors.

 

I bet it is the same wierd noise as mine, lol. That is so weird that Honda made such a good running car with quirky defects. I looked online and saw where the door lock switch was $70. I about crapped my pants. Now I see what Duane was talking about borrowing one to see if that was the problem.

 

Looks like both rear actuators are bad. I did have a new window motor installed in the drivers front. Works much better, but it is still getting hung up a bit. I have been advised to replace the window rubber by a couple of people. Any suggestions and where is the best place to get this at?

 

I would lube it all up a bit with some spray lube that comes out clear down those rubber channels, I think they are going to be pricey also.

 

You can fix the rear lock motors. I wish I'd taken photos when I did mine, but I was having the exact same problem. I think I remember there being a little piece of plastic that broke off or wore away. I remember bending a little metal tab 90 degrees, and the lock worked ok after that. Anyway, it's a known problem. Also, your driver/passenger key behavior is normal.

I guess I'm ressurecting this thread. My drivers side rear door lock took a crap yesterday. Now it makes that sound too! You can hear it attempting to open, but like previously posted, something must be broken or worn out. I'm going to take it apart and see what's up.

 

yeah my keyless entry rarely works, an occasionally my key wont even unlock the door, ive had to pop the trunk with the keyless entry an get in that way.

sorry to ressurect yet again...

but recently, my power door locks no longer work with the switch in the front like the guy in the first post..

BUT, I do not hear a sound in the rear.. I also noticed that a while before, when I would lock the doors, a minute later, it would cycle through an lock/unlock type of deal, and that would go on for a while.

Could it be that there is a door lock relay somewhere, and that the relay has gone bad? The way the locks kept on cycling, it seemed like some relay was switching on/off sparatically....

Any help? Where is the door lock relay located in the car???

yup i've been getting the same problem...i own a 96 coupe ex and sometimes, out of nowhere the lock switch makes some funny noises but the power locks no longer work. is there any write up on repair or trouble shooting order for this?...i think the first things to look at is the switches then that black box....???

The "black box" is the Power Door Lock Control Unit. I don't know why the box is labeled with ABS, and also don't know if it is connected with the ABS system. Anyway, if you have an owner's manual, it shows how to do diagnostics on this unit if you're having problems with the power door locks. I have a '96 Accord, and the female end on this unit connects with a male 14-pin connector. Honda sells these new for $160. I've tried the local junkyards, but all I can find is an earlier version of the door lock control unit, with a 12-pin connector.

On my '96 Accord sedan, when I use the key to unlock the driver's door, <U>and hold the key in that unlock position for another second or two</U>, the remaining doors will all unlock. When I use the key in the passenger door lock, it unlocks all four doors nearly simultaneously. It's a lot quicker than the driver's side as explained above. I didn't even realize that I could unlock all four doors from the driver's side until I read about it in the owner's manual.

That all said, the procedure I explained above - to unlock all four doors from the driver's keyhole - works intermittently. Using the service manual as a guide, I've tested the driver's door key cylinder switch, the actuator on the driver's door, and the power door lock control unit. They all pass the continuity and voltage tests as outlined in the service manual, so I'm thinking a short somewhere in the wiring, or the door lock control unit is about to go bad.

Associated subject - When the doors are locked, all the locks occasionally recycle and re-lock themselves. I got an actuator from a 97 Acura, so may end up replacing mine - or may continue search at the junkyard for a used 14-pin power door lock control unit.

Thoughts? Apologize for the long read...

 

The drivers door actuator is a pattern failure item, start there, TO ME, your symptoms say the actuator.

 

ABS is like ABC, remember ABC gum, already been chewed, your black box has already been serviced.

Duane, your recommended fix was spot-on. I got a good, used driver's door actuator out of a '97 Acura (identical part as the one in my '96 Accord). Swapped them out, and no problems to date in my Accord - no recycling locks, etc.

My Son has a 97 Accord and had similar situation. After car was turned off and locked, the locks would continually cycle on and off. This was not a problem when the car was running or in auxiliary. Only occurred when the car was turned off.

We were about to buy an actuator from Auto Zone but the parts guy suggested to disconnect the battery cables (both the neg and pos) and wait about 5 minutes and reconnect. Followed Auto Zone guys advise and the problem disappeared.

Auto Zone may have not made the 117.00 sale but because of the Auto Zone parts guy advise, I now am a loyal customer. Honda dealer wanted $300.00 to diagnose and repair.

I hope this saves other people with the same problem, aggrevation and expense of tearing the door panel apart and replacing the actuator.

 

Bernardis.com has genuine Honda parts cheap...I believe it's $30-40 dollar range for an actuator...good luck

 

I'm working on a 90 Accord that has 3 door locks functioning correctly, but the driver's door cannot be opened at all, I have the door panel loose but cannot get it off til the door is opened.
I've looked over an 89 Accord's driver's door innards to learn, but have been unable to trip the door latch manually on the 'problem' 90 Accord. Advice would be much appreciated.
