Default Steering Question

I just recently replaced my rack and pinion and the steering is a bit cocked. I was wondering if an alignment would be the fix for this problem. Thanks

dude i had the same problem and i got my alignment done and it fixed the problem for the most part. I would just make sure that everything is tightened and then go get my alignment.

my girlfriend posted this message for me while i was getting cleaned up, and she mis understood what i was saying. The steering wheel is actually cocked about 90 degrees to the drivers side (when im going straight the horn button blocks my view of the spedo, make sense?) Will the alignment still correct that problem, or do i need to drop the rack and try to re-adjust the steering.

I just recently did this swap as well. It sounds to me you didn't line up the knuckle under the dash the connects to the wheel properly and lock the wheel. Took me a couple of tries but i got it close enough then just had it aligned and fixed everything.

i would get the wheels pointed straight, look to see if the threads on the tie-rods are about the same,(they have the same number of threads past the jam nut).

i can't remember, maybe someone can back me up, i think the u-joint at the floor under the dash can be missaligned. some have main splines and only go one way. if not, pull the u-joint loose from the steering wheel column at the floor board. there may be a plastic cover over the column. pulls right off.

this adjustment can also be made at the steering wheel too. if you pull the wheel off and set it straight while you have the wheels straight. you'll be as good as you can without an alightment. i would still get it aligned. whenever steering components are removed or replaced (or suspension components) an allignment should follow.

why don't you align it yourself?
you were smart enough to install a new rack and pinion, an alignment is a piece of cake.

i've done mine so often i can get it nearly perfect on the first shot.

and yeah, an alignment can solve the issue you have. When you're driving and you hold the wheel steady(properly centered) in what direction does the car veer?

i veers off to the right a little...but not that bad because i adjusted the tie rod, but the problem is when the steering wheel is steady...its suppose to look like this......

but instead it looks like this.

see my problem....i need to starighten it out, and i dont know if an alignment will straighten it out that much.

yikes.

ok, so if you hold the steering wheel like this

it only goes to the right a little?
from what you're telling me if the alignment was that far off, when you held the wheel centered, it should pull to the right really hard.

if i were you i'd give my tie rods two full spins on each side, the passenger side you want to spin it out, the driver side you want to spin it in.

that should get it closer to center, depending on how bad it really is you may want to go three, but i can't really guess from here.

if this seems to make the problem better, then you'll know for sure its the alignment. but from past experience when my steering was that far off, when i centered the wheel the car would take off to the right as if i was turning a corner.

and i'm sure you know you need to hold the inner tie rod straight with a 14mm so it doesn't spin, but i do want to add that just to be certain.

No if I turned the steering wheel like is... it would take a hard right turn (not just a little), when i am driving down the road completly staright it looks like this now.... but I don’t want to align it myself, I would rather take it and let them professionally align it, I just want to know if the professional alignment will straighten my steering wheel back out, or do I have to lower the rack back out and try to get it straighter.

ok, that makes sense, and yes it is your alignment.

i guess i'm just not comfortable giving someone 70 bucks to turn my tie rods.

so you think the alignment will fix the steering wheel....and make it look normal again?
