Default Exhaust system help!

My car failed emissions and is leaking fumes through my shifter boot. The mechanic I go to recommended an entire exhaust system from the exhaust manifold back. I don't want to lose the flow but I need something with a catalytic converter on it or risk my car impounded.

What would I need to replace all of these components? As well as brands you guys would recommend?

This is total newfag material but it had to be asked.

Theres no reason to replace the WHOLE thing. The pipes don't do ****, emissions wise. The cat is the part that'll determine if you pass or not.

The exhaust seemed fine but it's leaking into my car and giving my noxious fumes.

And would the catalytic converter be the same as a resonator?

No, a resonator is to eliminate exhaust drone at steady rpms. a cat is for scrubbing emissions from the engine. The resonator is usually in the middle of the system, looks like a small muffler. I chopped mine off my car thinking i would get a boost in power, but all it did was make my car noisier. A cat also scratches the **** out of your furniture, and doesn't **** in the litterbox.

Just go to an exhaust shop and get them to check it out, mine was leaking bad, I got a shop to put a new donut gasket, install 2 new hangers on the catback and make sure it was all sealed for $37
