Default D16Z6 w/Y8 head configuration

Ok, first off, I have a few questions.

#1: I have a blown Y8 motor. Getting a D16Z6. Is there going to be any conflicting factors when swapping? Basically all that I am doing with this swap is swapping the motors. Replacing the Y8 with the Z6 utilizing all of the Y8 bolt-on's. Apparently, there is a sensor somewhere near the crankshaft that OBDII vs OBDI are significantly different that will cause the engine not to run. If this is true I need to know pretty quick because i'm supposed to pick up the Z6 today...

#2: If all goes well, will I be able to use the Y8 head and place it on top of the Z6 block? I heard the timing would be off but I have everything from the Y8 that is needed (pretty much just the cam gear?).

The Z6 head flows better. the only thing i see happing is the z6 dont have a crank position sensor. and the y8 does so you just wont hook up that plug there might be other sensors that the z6 migtht not have that the y8 did. cuz the z6 is older. but dont use the y8 head the z6 flows better use only the intake manifold off of the y8. have funnn!!!

We'll...can't you disable those sensors? I am going to be botling everything up that was on the Y8 (Transmission/all wires/etc), a friend thats doing my swap said something about the wiring somewhere down by the crank that differs from OBD1 and OBD2. He said that there is a chance it won't start up or run. Is that true? If so, whats the bypass if any?

When the people came and dropped off the motor, they gave me a IM that said "PGM-FI" is that the stock intake from the Z6?

why dont you just swap the oil pump so you have the crank sensor?
i dunno about the intake manifold but what does the block say? D16Z6? does it have a vtec solenoid?.. just use the z6 witht he y8 intake manifold..

The block does say Z6 and he was worried about that. If that is the fix for the crank sensor then thanks, I will certainly do that. The VTEC solenoid is there and in good condition.

oil pump is not interchangeable... if you go with z6 block your gonna need to use a y8 distributor from a 96-98 they have the crank angle sensor in the dizzy not on the oil pump..

then you will have to wire up those wires that went to the oil pump on ontp the dizzy i think they are the same color just find a 96-98 in a junkyard and take the plug off their harness to splice your hanress wires into..

the timing will be off a hair not much u can adjust it out with the dizzy.. the timing belts are the same... no matter what anyone else says i have done this before and i asked questions i got so many contradicting answers so i bougt both belts they are diff part numbers but the same amount of teeth and same length..

any more questions pm me ..

I thought the driverside mount is different...yeah, pretty sure it is...coulda sworn OBD-I and OBD-II d-series had different kinda of driverside mounts...

Could be wrong...but I don't think so...

I have a pretty low budget here. I got the block/z6 head and IM for $230. So...I need to find the cheapest way to get it running. Friends swapping it for $300.

Why do I have to use a Y8 Dizzy from a 96-98? I have a 2000 Y8 won't that work?

The reason for the 96-98 was already posted - it has the crank angle sensor in the distributor as opposed to down by the crank (where the Z6 doesn't have anything). If you want it to run properly, either get the right ECU and jumper harness or get a 96-98 dizzy.

Ok, I think i'll have to go with the dizzy and the OBD1 conversion harness for my P2P ECU...cannot afford a P28 ECU right now. All of this information is really helping me out. I will forward it all to my friend thats doing the swap, he was worried about the crank sensor dealy.

Why? The P28 is a GSR ECU isn't it? What benefit will I have using that on a SOHC motor? Generally, why can't I use it with the P2P?

Why can't I use the P2P? Is there a specific reason why I can't? I thought that the P28 was for GSR motors? My friend tried using one in his bult Y8 and almost blew up his motor.

P2P is the OBD2 D16Y8 ECU
P28 is the OBD1 D16Z6 ECU

Here is the list that I was told I needed to get before he could do the swap:

96-98 Distributer
92-95 Water pump
92-95 Timing belt
92-95 Timing belt tensioner

Minor things...
5qt of 5W30 synthetic oil
2qt of 10W30 transmission oil
2 gallons of pre-mixed coolant

My guy came to look at the engine and he told me that the cylinder walls were corroded, the block suffered from extreme overheating (since the cam cover had melted even onto the cam gear) and that the engine was overall garbage. So here I am sitting again. expletive...
