Default Help me remove the ignition lock cylinder.

I want to remove the ignition lock cylinder from the ignition lock housing. I have already removed the steering column covers, and can see the lock housing. Chilton says (for automatic trans) to place the shift in Neutral, then use a drift punch to push in the pin in the service hole with the key turned to the "I" position, then pull the cylinder out of the housing.

I have a '96 Civic EX 2 dr coupe.

I see 2 holes. One seems to have no pin in it. The other is a hole that is flush with the ignition lock housing with seemingly a pin. It moves when I push down on it, but does not go down enough to allow me to pull the cylinder out of the housing. What's wrong? Help!

Thanks.

use a dremel and cut 2 slots in the head of the bolt, then just use a screwdriver and back it out. when you reinstall it just add some thredlock to the threads

Thanks. I am leaving the lock housing in place, so I do not have to remove those break-off screws. I am trying to remove the key lock cylinder from the lock housing.

A locksmith told me that the pin should depress easily.

************************************************** ********************

Here's how to get it out. After removing the upper and lower steering wheel column covers, the ignition lock cylinder housing is exposed. The pin needing to be depressed is on the topside of the housing. A pin punch would be the best tool, but a small screwdriver, or other narrow rod or wire might work. That pin and a torx security screw (the one with the stud-like interference in the middle of the torx cavity) are the 2 things holding the lock cylinder in the housing. A security torx screwdriver (the screwdriver bit is available too) is needed to remove the screw. Turn the ignition key to the first "I" position, this allows the pin to be depressed. At the same time, pull outward on the key and the cylinder will come out. Watch out for a spring and other loose parts.

Thieves just break the whole cylinder. This information is useless to one.

After getting it out last week, a locksmith rekeyed it to match the doors.

are you trying to replace the cylinder? or do you mean the steering wheel lock thingy ? like when you don't have a key in the ignition & you turn the wheel the steering wheel locks?

if so, i'm pretty sure all you need to do is drill a hole in the copper part of the ignition cylinder on the bottom & then the some spring will fall out.

EDIT - nevermind, i see that you just had a locksmith rekey your cylimder.
