my civic hatch smokes alot from the exhaust piping .. why?
i believe something is wrong and getting worse.. its an 89 DX with stock engine b sides a cold air intake. the exhaust system is straight through.. no cats or muffler.. but it throws alot of white smoke all the time and burns alot of oil... what is wrong and how can i fix this.. it has 180K miles on the engine but runs fine.. all other major parts are brand new.. and it stinks when im driving cause of the smoke/burning smell...
thanks

check your oil cap, if it is foamy with a greenish tint, it is your head gasket. check your radiator to see if the fluid is low, or if it is a solid color. if it has a wavy appearance, it could mean that oil is getting into the coolant, again, head gasket.
if u smoke white smoke, its a rich fuel mixture.....
blue smoke its oil
if ur oil lever its low, u burning it. might be a worn valve seals ( comon on EF civics) piston rings, bad head gasket, etc,,,,....
gget it either rebuild, and stay with a shitty 92 hp engine , or swap for anotjher engine for the same price

Does it have a sickly sweet smell? If so, thats probably a blown head gasket.... Do whats mentioned above about checking your oil. If the coolant has passed over into it. PARK IT NOW... Otherwise you will destroy your bottom end, if it already has not happened.
my car does the same and i think it's the head so i'm just goin to rebuild it with kick *** parts if u find the porb let me know cuz i want to know thanx l8er

well one thing is you have no cat converter. another thing it could be has been mentioned on the prior posts. mostly could be just the fact that you have no cat. It would filter a lot of junk you wouldn't see. since its not there you might be able to see it now.
rich fuel mixture is a black smoke.
You can test the ring by doing a dry then wet compression test.
