Default Circuit City workers Take a look...

Whats up guys,

I applied for a job at a Circuit City near me, Ive put in a decent amount of stereos, Probably about 10 Complete Systems, and maybe 5 Just head units.

Ive never Put in an alarm or any major stuff

Anyway, What other Stuff do you guys do at circuit city, Do you just install products that circuit city sells?

Do they train, like if i dont know how to do somthing do they show how to do it

Alarms, remote starts, keyless entries, stereos, speakers, amps, bypassing factory amps, integrating factory amps, radar detectors, satellite radios, gps, in dash dvd/navigation, overheads, head rests, dynamat, lots of troubleshooting.

Yeah, they train you. Unfortunately, they recently fired all their senior installers...

You don't make boxes, fiberglass, or do any crazy custom work like replacing fabric or pinstriping.

That is correct also they don't pay worth a crap. The job at CC is a joke.

some people i know are really good but most are really bad. I built my own amplifier out of parts from circuit city, i asked them if they had a power line noise filter, i said every name that i could think of that people called it, drew out the schematic and they thought i was making crap up...then i went to Santa Fe Autosound(Overland Park, KS) and they knew right off the bat what i was talking about...and i was even talking to the head of the roadshop

I know someone that works at circuit city and he makes good money. I work at best buy and the money is decent and way better then any mom and pop shop. Plus they always hire from with-in and most of the installers above me are now store managers making very good money.

Also if costumers are willing to pay we will do any custom work, including fiberglass, or upholstery, but most people think that we won't, so they don't even think to come to Best Buy.

I dont know whats up with the independent retailers in your area but in most citys the installers at smaller shops make much more than at a BB or CC. I almost doubled my income going from best buy to the local shop I work at now. We make 40% commission on the jobs we install and we frequently do custom work, we are equipped to unlike the BB I worked at that couldnt even cut a piece of MDF.
with more skill comes more money.
CC and BB are a good way to get your foot in the door though.

Opposite here. I almost doubled my money going from independent to best buy. Plus I did twice as much work. I tinted windows in the summer and did remote starters in the winter, and did audio stuff all year round, including custom work. heated seats, hands free cell phone everything. From my experiences independent bosses suck. when ever I asked for a raise I was told I was "replaceable". another thing about independents is you stuck in one spot, my boss owned the place, there was no moving up in the company. Like I said before, some ex best buy installer are now managers making good money.
The group of best buy installers that I work with are good (a least most of them) two with alot of auto body knowledge, and I can do fiberglass work, and we have all the tools to do so. we always have MDF on hand, and the tools to cut it. I understand that not ever best buy has this though.

Yea I worked as a MECP Installer at BB for 5 years and anytime I asked management about customers that needed custom work done they just laughed at me and said no. I also left and went to a independent shop where I made more money and was given free rain over whatever I wanted to do or learn just my .02

I would much rather have a guaranteed paycheck than to have the ups and downs of working on commission. You can find yourself in a bad position that way. And it can screw your credit up big time.

The other big problem with mom and pop shops, besides having no real job security, is that the installer is financially responsible for any damage claims he/she may cause. My senior installer used to work at Al & Ed's and he can tell you all kinds of stories. But he aspires to work for one of the big custom shops.
