what do you guys think of tercels?
They are about the same weight as crx's, very cheap, and you can drop a 4age engine in there to give you 160 hp... the stock engine is pretty much worthless though. just want your opinions, i think it would be pretty fun to hook up too, it would definately be a challenge because of the weak aftermarket for them. most of the mods would have to probably be homemade.
i wouldn't ever consider a car like that without having a fabrication shop that i could make my parts in. weak aftermarket for a reason! those cars have little potential.
How much HP does a 4age have? I always thoguht it was about 120-130, not 160... If they had 160 those old school Mr2s should be fast, but my ZC can take em...
Yeah, I think your right, I think the 4age is around 135... I believe i quoted the hp on either the jap spec 4age or the 4agze.
And I actually think these cars have excellent potential, if you can find the parts for them.

ok...former toyota guy here...first of all..you cant drop a 4age into a tercel...i believe it has a different series engine..4e i think?....2nd...a usdm 4age is about 112 hp up untill 90 or 91..when it had about 130hp...thanks to higher compression...which means you'll have to run higher octane...now..that outa the way...here comes the good news...there is an engine that you can import to drop right into the tercel..and its turbo!...its the 4e-fte....i'm not quite sure how much hp it has..if you search the net..im sure you can find plenty on that swap..ive seen it..and i think its pretty popular with tercel guys...heh..anyway...if you are interested in 4age engines..there are a few different options as far as chassis go...there is the 87,88 corolla fx16..or the 88-91 corolla gts..or 90,91 chevy nova twin cam...they all have the 4age..and they are all FF...and of course everyone knows about the 85-87 corolla gts (ae86) which is FR and very popular in the drifting scene....ok so those are some chassis that you can drop a 4age into..now the good part...around 90 or 91 in japan they updated the 4age and gave it VVT and 4 throttle bodies...and 5 valves per cylinder...boosting hp to around 160...this engine is usually called "the 20 valve"...in the mid 90s its updated again to make 170 hp..and the redline is raised to 9100rpm (i believe)... and a 6speed manual with lsd is optional...this all sounds pretty appetising...but the thing to remember is that this is jdm only..so you cant walk into any parts store..and get a head gasket for a 20v...or even a distributor cap...so that would probably be annoying...parts would be a bitch to find...and expensive..
so anyway...those are some options for the tercel..and 4age...
forgot about the mr2..85-89 mr2's had the 4age

Man, thank you for that much needed info! But you can drop a 4age into a tercel, it is not a stroll in the park, but it can be done. I have searched tercelonline.com and i have found that one or two of the people there have done it. From what i have seen, it is no easy task but is possible. You can swap the 5e-fe from 92-95 paseos into a tercel also cant you? I think those engines put out around 105 hp, please correct me if im wrong.
go drive one, then you'll see how much potential they have. my dad has one, its quite comparable to geo metro !
A stock CRX HF or DX is also comparable to a geo metro.
What's wrong with a Civic DX?
Tercels are beaters. That's what they should be used for.
Tercels are beaters. That's what they should be used for.
Once again, a stock non-si CRX is a beater... whats the difference?
I would, but I would only get biased opinions.... well, now that i think about it, i believe that i am getting alot of biased replys from here.... dont go on what everybody else thinks about tercels, go on what you think, lets compare a '95 tercel DX to a '90 Civic DX hatch...
Resale price (100,000 miles good condition)= Tercel has slightly better resale price
Highway mileage= Civic-34 Tercel-39
Same safety rating
Tercel has a .25 advantage on reliability rating
Civic has a 5" larger wheelbase
Tercel is almost 200 lbs lighter than the Civic
Civic- 92 hp 1.5L 4 Cylinder Front-Wheel drive
Tercel- 93 hp 1.5L 4 Cylinder Front-Wheel Drive
I really dont know why the tercel isnt more popular. still, nobody has given me a good reason as to why the civic hatch boomed and the tercel didint. If the tercel had been as popular as the civic, there would have been more aftermarket parts and a larger selection of engines to swap, but for some reason that didnt happen.
*shrugs*
on that tercel website they HATE hondas. they bash them really bad. I just though on the performance mods section they had a "tach" as a performance mod.

I guess the feeling is mutual then? I consider making jokes about their aftermarket 'bashing' as well... but anyways.
That's why I hate it when Civic owners laugh at the tercel/sentra/corolla owners trying the same thing...
Amen.
i think the reason tercels havnt caught on ...its because they are so damn ugly, tercels handle like ****,no good engine drops in easily, not many aftermarket parts available, did i mention ugly?..and toyota never actually tried to make the tercel sporty..unlike honda did with the civic...i think to most people..it's just way too much trouble to bother with spending so much effort on a tercel.....now..the corolla on the other hand is a decent platform to work with..toyota offered a few versions of the corolla made to compete with the crx..and civic si...they can be modded pretty easily..with imported engines that drop right in...and some aftermarket parts are still available for them...the engines are usually a lot cheaper than honda ...but the aftermarket parts..are usually twice the price of honda parts..because there is hardly any market...and no competition..so they can sell the parts for however much they want...for example...i bought ground control coil overs for my corolla fx16...and they were $399..but the same kit for the civic is around $300 i believe..maybe even less...which is why i bought a crx...it's just a lot easier..and cheaper to build a fast honda...
i think toyota enthusiasts only bash honda guys because...they figure everyone that owns a honda is a ricer...and is only interested in looking cool..not a serious sports car enthusiast...and it makes sense..look at most civic drivers...its easy to stereotype....another reason they talk **** is probably because they are a little jealous that honda guys have it so easy...with parts...and respect...good example: i drive a 87 corolla fx16..which is comparable to a 88-91 civic si...only the engine is dohc..and it has a little more hp...wherever i go..i get no respect at all..people look at my car and laugh..because its not a civic...they dont understand why i would ever want to race a corolla...but they are driving a stock civic dx with euro tail lights...and a body kit??? THIS is why so many toyota guys talk trash about honda guys...blame ricers.

ya those sentra things are pretty damn grosse and fugly i would even coooonsider changinf it for my Si CRX. And i sure the hells hope i can beat one of those
For the most part everyone is right. Tercels never caught on b/c they are Ugly. But there are a few exceptions out there. There is the guy around the corner from me that has a sick wide body tercel. I'm sure it's a custom job but that thing is hard! Not fast at all. But damn it turns heads. And as far as blazing sentras and such, my friend has I believe it's a 91, Sentra SER that wil blaze on a B16 hatch. But if you want to hookup a tercel More power to you. It's pretty uncommon. But if you have the money then do it. ****, If I had the money I'd build like an 86 hyundai and sleep on every one! Still my love is all for the 4G Civic
thekori my freind is trying to get an fx16, how are they, they quick? How does it compare stock to a CRX si stock? I dont know, never really even seen one. Thanks.
the fx16 was made in 87 and 88...its pretty heavy (2400lbs)...comes standard with 4 wheel disc brakes...112hp dohc 1.6L engine...i think around 109ft/lbs of torque. acceleration isnt impressive..its about 8.5-9.0 seconds 0-60 depending on what magazine tests it..and the quarter mile is around 17 flat..comes with front and rear anti-roll bars..factory front strut tower bar..handling is pretty good..not quite up to par with the crx si... the fx16 has rear seats..and power steering..usually AC..so it weighs a lot more than the crx...i think it all depends on what he wants to do with the car..and how much he wants to spend..and how important it is to be different..because to go fast(in a straight line or around corners)..buying a honda would be cheaper, easier and would yield better results...the downside is..everyone and thier mother drives a honda..
sentra se-r's are badass!! they may be ugly but they have the sr20de! and factory LSD...never underestimate a 91-94 sentra se-r...sr20det's drop right in...in stock form the se-r should blow any stock crx or civic outa the water...
