Default Burnt ecu... which component is this? P28

My buddies car stopped working the other day, and now his fuel pump doesn't turn on. We checked fuses and then the ecu... This is what we found...

EDIT: its a p06 actually

I'm a noob to ecus, but that part looks ok to me. Whats actaually wrong with it? Fuel pump wont prime up, 1st thing I would check is the Main Relay.

i think hes emphasizing on the fact that its not a perfect cylinder.. meaning it melted or warped.

That is a capacitor. not many people on this site will know what it actually does though.

If that is the only bad part, taking that thing out and soldering the new one in would be easy.

That would be a fried capacitor, can be replaced with one from radio shack, as long as you match all the specs, and have a steady hand with a soldering iron. If you have never done something like that, I would not recommend it, you can bridge connections pretty easily without realizing it.

Looks like something shorted out. Do you have any blown fuses? Did you have the cover off the ECU for tuning (maybe something fell in there)? Before plugging in a new ECU I'd figure out which burnt traces go to the output connector and check those wires for shorts or wiring problems.

That ECU may have been a P06 but it looks like a P28 now (VTEC components added).

OMFG a TECH thread!?!? No way.

What others said. Replace the cap, then try again. If you're lucky that's the only thing that got fried.

I believe that this is becoming a common problem with honda ecus. Electrolytic capacitors can only last so long, the electrolyte evaporates. If there is not enough electrolyte in there, the cap will become basically a short circuit, and that would explain the burning/melted plastic.

The life at 30deg C is something like 20 years though, supposedly. Maybe that is off a little bit, or maybe it gets hotter than we think inside teh ecu case.
