Default Check engine light in 1st Gen CRV

My parents drive a 1999 CRV AWD with 13x,xxx miles (can't remember exactly). Anyway, they had a CEL come on the other day and got it checked. It was code 1456. The guy told us it could be a loose gas cap or a bad gas cap, but we checked the cap and it looked fine. We made sure it was on there nice and tight too. Any ideas as to what else could cause this?

Thanks in advance.

P1456 is one of the two codes for the Evap system. Most common causes are loose or bad fuel cap (tighten it at least three clicks, and just because it "looks" good doesn't mean it is), or a faulty canister vent shut valve. Often times the canister itself needs to be replaced along with the valve.

By the way, are there any ways to reset the CEL without undoing the battery? We would rather not have to reprogram everything if we didn't have to.

autozone can reset it. If you make a friend at the dealership they can run a "function test" on the system to try to narrow down the problem
