Whats the best way to keep the crank from turing while torquing the crank bolts down?Leave the car in gear?

 

Use a crank pulley holding tool. If not, put the car in gear, but the engine will move quite a bit before you'll be able to get the bolt torqued.

 

or the shove a screw driver in the flywheel peep hole to stop the crank from moving...

Get the crank pulley tool. Its not very expensive.

 

put it in 5th and have someone stomp on the breaks.

worked every time for me, easy as pie

That's the easiest way for manual tran. Otherwise, use the pulley tool.
