Default VTec problems

Ok, I have a CRX with a jdm b16. I'm throwing a code for VTec solenoid/spool valve (code 21). Would gas in the oil cause the CEL and code 21, and not let the VTec engage? I know the solenoid is good 'cuz I jumped it directly to the battery and it clicked. Any ideas how to figure out the problem? ECU (PR3) is only throwing code 21, nothing else. And the CEL is indeed on. Car runs fine and everything too. I drove it and it's not even in "safe" mode...just no VTec...Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Also I have another post about draining oil completely to get rid of the oil/gas mixture, which I think may be the problem; if you have info on that, let me know. Thanks.

That's what I'm thinking...I need to get a system flush/oil change/add going. Anyway to check the pressure without a gauge? If that wire on the back that goes to the oil pressure switch is disconnected, would that cause it? I doubt it's disconnected, but it's better to check.

typical problems for vtec is either vtec solenoid is not connected to correct pin or that vtec activation does not a proper ground

good luck

Check the continuity of the vtec solenoid wire from the solenoid to the the proper ecu wire. If it's good, and has no continuity with body group, then you know at least the wire itself is not the problem.

easiest thing is to run a new wire from a4 to the solenoid. or make sure it is in the ecu good

Hmmmm the oil/gas smell. You'll have to take apart your engine and clean it, or maybe just your oil pan.

Hmmm a4...I should check that...the wiring does have continuity, that was the first thing I checked like a week ago...Also I'm pretty sure the solenoid is ground well because I jumped the solenoid straight to the pos. side terminal on the battery to see if I could hear the click, and it did turn on. I just think that it may be in the wrong pin on the ECU. The hasport sub vtec harness is being used, but was installed by the previous owner. I'm gonna check that tonight...hopefully it's in the wrong spot lol.

Yea, was hoping that I wouldn't have to do that...but I might have to. I'm gonna use some cheap *** oil and try to flush it, then refill with good oil and run again to bring the pressure up. Hopefully it's the pressure though. Thanks for the help guys, keep it coming!!

Ah ha! I have been wanting to do this...lol. But I'm too lazy. Do you know if that would cause the CEL to throw? Also ECU throwing the VTec code too...any idea?

Ah ha! lol. Thanks, but the wire in a8 is going to the vtec solenoid, and it has continuity.

Thanks everyone, but I solved my problem. I flushed the engine with cheap new oil and then replaced with good oil and a good oil filter. It was either gas in the oil, or the oil pressure itself that the problem was coming from. I cleaned out the solenoid, and then did the flush.

Also my oil pressure switch, on the back of the block, had a loose wire...that may have been the problem also? Iono. All I know is I drove the car with no CEL and no code from the ecu and it was................
