What is the flow rate of coolant?
Does anyone know the approx. flow rate of coolant, car warmed up at idle?
I'm working on an engineering design project to use the hot coolant in a heat exchanger to heat water for a camping shower.
thanks.

That depends on the size and design of the rotors on the water pump and the idle speed of the engine, as well as the temperature of the coolant.
Yes, if you assumed a steady state, (i.e. constant idle speed, constant temperature of coolant after being warmed up ~180 deg F) would 5 GPM be a close approximation?
Think about the efficiency of the otto cycle and the number of BTU's heading into the cooling system. That may help your calc's a bit also.
