tachometer wiring question
hey guys, I have a 91 dx (no tach in the stock cluster) that I bought an Autometer Cobalt tach for and I had a wiring question. I was wondering if there was a way to wire the tach directly to the guage cluster wires instead of running the wires all through the car? I looked in FAQ and I searched but the closest thing I could find was in an Acura forum. They said the following connections could be made:
TACH WIRES / CLUSTER WIRES
Green / solid blue
Red / black-yellow or black-white
White / red-black
Black / black (obviously)
does anyone know if it would be the same for a hatch?
- are the wire colors even the same?
Thanks guys

why dont you just run the green wire to the distributor, black to ground and the red and white to power
no sure about thhe wireing but if you look for some wireing diagrams on the tach from any other model you should be able to get the wireing and what goes where!

These guys are right, the easy way would be to follow the tachs directions, however i see what your trying to do and i believe many cars that do not come with a tach to indeed have the provisions for one, IE if you swapped a cluster with a tach in it, it probably would work. again I am not sure that your particular make and model but i have found this to be true in many other cars, with that in mind you may have to get a wire diagram for a dash insert that has a factory tach and find where the tach input wire is this would sort the gree tach wire, you would still need to run the white black and red to their proper locations.
and yeah sam is right white normaly goes to the dimmer on your parking lights or just the parking lights if you dont want the tach to dim with the dash.

Green / Solid blue on the Distributor
Red / Ignition (on and Off switch)
White / To Dimmer Switch (on and off for lights)
Black / Ground
Make you have a tester when your connecting these wires. Good Luck

I don't remember if my STD hatchback had the tachometer wire; but I swapped out my dash to my CRX DX dash; and just used the wire from there. Both were 1988's though.
You can take out your gauge cluster and check. That's probably the best way and shouldn't be hard to do. If there's none there, you can go ahead and put in the wire for the tachometer to the engine bay and have a clean setup.
