I noticed my car has developped a wired whistling noise. I when i press the clutch down, the noise goes away but when the clutch it's up, the whistling comes back. Now this is done in neutral so i know it's something with the clutch or the tranny. It kind of sounds like a AEM sucking air in at idle. It's a bearing going in the tranny? Does anyone know? Thanks
BTW - i have a 94 GSR motor in my car (no LSD)

I'm thinking maybe something with the flywheel? Guessing here.
Either way, if you know for sure its something in the transmission, its gonna have to be taken off. I would just stop worrying and take it to a shop to have them take the transmission off to see what the problem is.

It's quite possible it's the throwout bearing... Mine makes an annoying whistling noise..... it's been making that noise since my clutch was replaced a while ago.... haven't bothered with it since it's more of a nuisance then a problem..... You may want to get a shop to check, just to make sure...

the throw out bearing slides inside the middle of the clutch inside of the tranny, thats how mine was, and if it is not that it has something to do with the tranny cause it will not do it when the clutch is in! good luck

So i wouldn't need to open the tranny to fix the throwout bearing?? Also, can i drive like that? I am going lapping this weekend...the whole weekend...do you think it will last?? If not, i am not going to bring my car. Thanks

yes the bearing can shred itself and spew metal chunks into your pressure plate and clutch disk, also harming your flywheel.
the tell tale sign of the release/throwout bearing is the fact that the noise is on or off depending on when the clutch pedal is in or out.
the bearing is easy as pie to replace since you do NOT need to split open the tranny.
But you have to drop the tranny to replace the bearing... so you might want to get that lightweight flywheel or new clutch you always wanted since you will need to drop the tranny for those installs too.
or switch to a Civic Si tranny.. shorter gearing =

Ok...i just got off the phone with the shop that did my swap. They are saying if the throwout/release bearing is bad, it will only make whinning noises if you are ON the clutch, not off. But right now, whenever my clutch pedal is down (pressing the pedal), the noise goes away and the pedal is up (not pressing it), the noise returns. Could this still be a bad throwout bearing??

Im having the same problem and I have been running my car for a while with it. Its starting to sound really bad. My syncro is also screwed because my gears grind from 2nd to 3rd. I think im going to put a DX tranny from my friends 98 DX (free). I know its has taller gears but how bad will it be? I know that I will be in boost longer but I think I will loose alot of acceleration? What do you guys think?
Sorry i kinda changed the subject eg-six
