Removing the knuckle makes it go a lot faster, so I suggest you do that. On the bottom of each ball joint, just under the boot is a snap ring that will need to be removed. Then you can use a big *** hammer on the stud to tap it out of the hole. For easier installation of the new ball joint, place it in the freezer until you are ready to install it. The will make tapping it in that much easier.

so the ball joint pops out threw the top of the housing? my lower ball joint boot is torn so i need to replace that one, i have it all disconnected and the hub out of the way it allmost looks like the ball joint needs to be pulled out not pushed out or maybe i am looking at things wrong.. thanks

You ned to pop the ball joint out of the lower control arm first, and then do the steps above, it can be a bitch to get out, but since your replacing it, just use a pickle fork, which will make it go faster. Do not use a pickle fork if you plan on reusing the joint, as it tears the boot on the joint almost all the time.
