i need some help when i down shift something is making a nasty winding noise im not to sure what to look for or what to do so if anyone knows anything id appreciate the help. its a 97 civic with d16y5
My 98 civic ex made a really obnoxious noise in first gear. It did it a lil bit in 2nd and maybe 3rd, but it was horrible in first. Everyone I talked to said that it was my output bearing. I never got it fixed, bc i was told it would be simpler to just swap a new tranny in than to fix just that one thing. They also said I could still drive it like that. My dad's gf drives the car now and its still making that stupid noise, but it hasn't broken down on her or anything like that.

Well, I drove with a trans making that noise for over 30K miles until it really got bad. I don't know why everybody thinks it's so hard to fix, once you have the transmission dropped out it's a breeze.

The mainshaft bearing is closest to first gear, so it would make more noise on that end of the transmission when it's going bad. It's getting bad, trust me. However, you can drive it like this for a while yet. Once it starts whining in second and third, it's really getting bad.
